Free stuff from my mobile carrier? Cool. Probably mostly marketing stuff, but still nice.

I take a little further.   First , after the update, I always do a dist-upgrade with just download mode.   Then I do a regular upgrade before the dist-upgrade, with a good bit of install -f in there for good measure.   Once the sources have been changed, here is my basic script, looking for errors at each step.

Start with a backup and disconnect the backup drive just in case RAID or LVM goes off the deep end, or GRUB decides to use the external drive instead of the real LVM drive on the RAID array.

apt-get update
apt-get install -f
apt-get dist-upgrade -dy
apt-get dist-upgrade -dy
apt-get upgrade -y
apt-get install -f
apt-get upgrade -y
apt-get install -f
apt-get dist-upgrade -y
apt-get install -f
apt-get dist-upgrade -y
apt-get install -f

Then a nice shutdown -r now and hopefully all is well.

This is a great set of concepts.

This has the potential to be very bad. It could let criminals and worse alter the firmware remotely and do anything they like including snooping on all of what you are doing.
Interesting.

When you do this the first time, it looks like a simple oversight - left-overs from some debugging perhaps. But when you "fix" it by hiding it, it's very clearly deliberate.

Netgear, Cisco, quick question please? What exactly does it take to actually care about your customers instead of actively trying to screw them?
