Bought some full contact pads for Kickboxing at the weekend. That way I can partake in full contact sparring instead of shadow boxing. Avoided having a go with them during a grading on Saturday (our Alex called me a fanny for that!). I figured I would have a go with the pads during training first. OK, so at training last night I had a go with them for the first time. I took part in 5 x 3 minute fights with a varied mix of sizes and abilities; including one huge newcomer who obviously knows how to kick well. Lessons learned...

1. Hit back properly, not sort of mid-way between shadow boxing and full contact like. It's amazing how hard this is if you aren't a natural fighter. My mind was saying 'not too hard, it's just sparring'. It takes some pushiing past this mindset for somebody like me.

2. If you don't hit back properly, they will just keep hitting you, and hard too regardless of how big/small experienced/inexperienced they are, with both fists and feet.

3. The pads work really well to protect you; I was nervous about that. I took a real pounding from some of these peeps, but I didn't come away thinking never again. In fact, every time I took a particular pounding I had to stop. Not for air, or a bit of space away from it, but to stop myself from laughing through my mouth gaurd. A strange mixture of fun/nervousness I guess. What a buzz it is getting hit from all sides with various limbs.

4. Once I started hitting back a little more properly, I started to look like I was starting to fight at least, rather than just taking a clobbering. My mind was still saying 'not too hard' at the same time still.

I'll be better prepared next time, Wednesday night in fact! Hopefully I will get past the softly softly approach that sits in the back of my mind there.
