Well, it was a bit of a bump back into real life today after our amazing trip to visit family & friends on the west coast, but my trusty hiking companion, Leo, helped me ease back into my routines!

One of the best things we did during our drive through CA was hike in Joshua Tree National Park--the desert is in full bloom after their rainy season. But I did that classic tourist mistake of saying, "Ooh, I want a photo of the pretty pink flowers!" and brushed against a cholla cactus with my ankle...that's the fuzzy one here. I took a walk in Maudsley State Park today and thought about some research I did yesterday, where I found a quote by Sarah Josepha Hale, a 19th-century writer and editor, that seems as relevant today as it was in her time, just after the Civil War:

“Everything that contributes to bind us in one vast empire together, to quicken the sympathy that makes us feel from the icy North to the sunny South that we are one family, each a member of a great and free Nation, not merely the unit of a remote locality, is worthy of being cherished.”
