Just not a good airport to depart from if you're flying from the big island directly back to the mainland. Many, if not most of the flights are red-eyes leaving between 10 and midnight. Take US Airways for example.. 11:45 PM is their only departing flight. You can't check in with US Air until 8:45 PM when their ticket counter agents show up. So if you arrive before then, there's really nowhere to sit. It's really bad if you have small children. If you could get through security at least you'd be inside the airport. Instead, you have dozens of TSA agents sitting around doing nothing because the airlines are too cheap to staff their ticket counters. Then when the agents show up, you have a line at TSA.... and at this point, your kids up way past their bedtime are in meltdown mode. The facilities are minimal.. eat before you get there. It is an open air facility, so plan accordingly. Don't arrive too early for your flight with the plan of waiting inside the terminal. Check with the airline to find out when you should get there. Or, fly through Honolulu on Hawaiian Airlines. They have flights all day long, and have their act together. Worst case scenario is you end up with a long connection in HLN, which is a real airport, unlike KOA. It's a shame.. the island is awesome. If they're serious about increasing visitors, KOA needs an overhaul.

Relatively easy airport to get in and out of but WATCH OUT for the speed trap between the highway and parking lot. It's a long straightaway with only a couple of signs marked 25 MPH. The airport security sits on a side street and picks off tourists and locals. I got a speeding ticket there that caused my friend to be late to his flight by 4 minutes. Yes, 4 minutes! The airline refused to board him and he had to wait 12 hours for the next flight. My ticket cost $160... a very expensive mistake for both of us!

I used National Car Rental on Maui and the Big Island while on our recent vacation and could have not been more pleased with the service and the quality of the vehicles that they provided. I would give a 10 on a scale of 1 to 10.

the shuttle dropped us off, someone was there to greet us getting off the shuttle, they said pick any car, and we were gone! simple! that's the way it should be!, we already filled out the paper work online, why stand in lines? We rented the Jeep Compass, comfortable, but not great gas milage.

Not bad. Friendly people. Of course over priced items at any airport. But friendly staff. I was injured and limping. They were very nice to me at Alaska airlines. And TSA was respectful as well.

I used a different RAC until I had my first National experience. Never have I been treated with so much courtesy. The service sold me on moving from another RAC over to national. Cars are always clean and maintained in the highest standards. I will not move to any other RAC. I am pleased with National Car Rental.

Cars were always ready (three rentals), clean and filled with gas. First rental had the A/C running in the car, so it was a cool ride to the resort. Tried using the automated check in for the 3rd rental, but paperwork was already processed, so it couldn't find reservation causing a short ( 3 - 4 minute) delay in picking up vehicle. Did change one pick up time (6 hours earlier) and they were very accommodating in making the request happen.

Kind of unique in that the airport is mostly outdoors but, wow, it's chaos. Gate numbers are hard to find, multiple planes board in relatively small areas ensuring everyone is confused. I'm amazed an airport this badly run exists in 21st century America.
