Scott grew up in Dallas (Go Cowboys!) and then attended the University of Texas at Austin (Hook ‘Em!). While in school, he interned at the NBC affiliate in Austin and also was Sports Director at the student TV station, KVR.

Three years later, he was hired as Sports Director at KNDU-TV in Kennewick, Washington. While in the Northwest, Scott was the sideline reporter for Spokane Sports Television, calling nationally-broadcast Arena Football Games and hydroplane races. Scott was honored twice by the Society of Professional Journalists for his sports reporting. From there he joined KCCI.
