Harlan came to Billings, MT, in 1974 (i think it was). he spoke in the evening at my dad's college (then: Eastern MT; now: MSU-Billings; ugh). but someone at the high school found out he was in town & got him to an assembly. i remember kids getting up to leave as he repeatedly used the word "shit".
that night, at EMC, someone shot at him with a rifle (probably a .22). Harlan, being Harlan, didn't even flinch. he stood his ground and hollered for the coward to come up on stage & face him like a man. the coward, of course, did not. years later i got him to tell the story at a book signing at Powell's. he relished it.

i think it will take something like a meteor from outer space to take our Harlan. god sure won't be able to.

Jerry Gretzinger's blog is a infrequently-updated chronicle about what he does and how he continues to create his amazing map of Ukrania. It's not updated often, but when he does, the updates are of great value, and they offer a not-to-be-missed look at the creative process in action.
Someone on the internet recently claimed that I didn't consider my map as a work of art. This is my reflection.

What'ch'a gonna do when the void comes for you?
Thanks for all your interest in the videos that Tyler has been doing! The "Mixing Paint" one alone has had almost 1300 page views. Very gratifying! The Ebay store, on the other hand, has been left in the shadows. We don't nee...

[design] The ABC Of Lettering, A Type Handbook From the 50s
3155. I'm not quite sure where I got this gem, but it's going to be a valuable resource. The book is called The ABC of Lettering, and the author is J.I. Beiegeleisen. It was apparently first published in the 1940s, and this copy that I scored somehow was ap...

[art, map] The Story of the Void in Jerry Gretzinger's Map
3157. Back last year I posted here about a most singularly delightful thing, Jerry's Map . To recap, the story goes kind of like this: One day, in 1963, during lulls in what is only described as a tedious job, Jerry Gretzinger, a resident of New York State,...

3156. Whether or not I waste time in the studio, she's watching me. Almost like she's keeping score. Sure, I can screw off, but I'll have to answer to the fluffball.

[artist] Jack Ohman Comes Back To Portland
3154. … but just for a night. But one night is better than no nights, then, isn't it? I will admit to being a rather giddy fan of Jack. During the 80s, the 90s, and the double-aughts, as he defined political humor for The Oregonian, I became a fan. Impossib...

Story
Introduction
Graphic designer, writer, editor. Worker in the Big Machine; the quintessential working-class native Oregonian, I drive some of the grimier gears so the Big Cats and Kittens don't have to. Am in the process of reinventing myself as the artist I always ought to have been. My blog is The ZehnKatzen Times.

Sho's Auto Repair does things the old-fashioned way. They fix what needs to be fixed, and what they fixed stays fixed. They charge a fair price and won't gratuitously break your budget. We love Rod and Mike. 1972 VW Beetle with a blown starter, back on the road in a a day, less than $200.

Dr Behrends is the wisest and most compassionate veterinarian we have ever known. I don't see how I could possibly expand on that statement.
