SEIGFRIED TRIO AT JAZZ SHOWCASE
facebook.com/events/890839611028373/
Tuesday, July 28 – Sets at 8pm & 10pm
Jazz Showcase – 806 S Plymouth Ct, Chicago
$10 ($5 students & musicians)

I haven't been playing much with my jazz trio, since I'm working on a grad degree at the University of Chicago Divinity School, writing professionally on religion, teaching classes on mythology, etc. So this is a rare chance to see my trio with the fantastic Chris Greene (sax) & Steve Corley (drums). Sets are at 8pm & 10pm; they'll feature different music, so stay for both!

Just recorded string bass parts for new tracks by Don Falcone's Spirits Burning featuring Steve Hillage (Gong) & Cyrille Verdeaux (Clearlight). I played the bass formerly owned by Earl May (Charlie Parker, Coleman Hawkins, Billy Taylor) & Richard Davis (Eric Dolphy, Sarah Vaughan, Joe Henderson). It's nice to be a teensy tiny footnote to history.

LEMMY (1945-2015)

I learned to play bass by figuring out Lemmy's bass parts on Hawkwind's "Space Ritual" double-LP, which I had saved up to buy from a little record store that no longer exists.

I also saved money from my first job to buy a wine-red 1977 Rickenbacker bass to get his sound. I made my own Motörhead jean-vest in high school using bleach and permanent marker.

When I met him in LA in 1990 or 1991, he was 8 feet tall. At least, that's how I experienced it. He told me he was the world's best bass player. I didn't argue.

Today, I still use ideas from his Hawkwind and Motörhead records in jazz, improvised and rock contexts. He's the king.
