As noted in the article, it is likely that fewer people will own cars and as a result, subscriptions to "Transportation Services" like Waymo, Uber and Lyft are likely to be the norm in some places.

The other side of that is that the last real freedom is gone: The freedom to come and go as one pleases. A subscription is likely to look like a cable TV bundle with 5 round trips to work each day plus a few scheduled shopping trips and an allowance of some number of impromptu trips.

What this means is that people whose only means of transport is through their subscription are deanonymized. Their transportation service provider will know their coming and going as the last bastion of privacy falls.

And of course, your assigned vehicle will have an interactive touch screen display that plays info-tainment custom tailored to your specific likes, peppered with advertisements targeted to you.

The technological achievement of autonomous vehicles is nothing short of miraculous. Not all that long ago it's creators would have been burned as witches. Given the loss of privacy and the further intrusion of advertisers into our lives, that might not be a bad idea.

I'm on record elsewhere with the seemingly cynical observation that the pharmaceutical industry learned their lesson after polio and smallpox: There is no business model in curing disease. That budding young pharma recruits talking about finding cures are quickly given "the talk." "We're not in business to find cures, we're in business to develop treatments. And as long as the patient dies of something other that what we're treating them for, the treatment is a success. Is that clear?

Now it seems that Goldman Sachs has come to the same conclusion. Gilead developed a cure for Hepatitis C. It was worth $12 billion the first year. It's value had declined every year since as the number of cases drops. Eventually it will no longer be profitable at all. At least until someone like Martin Shkreli comes along.

Finding methane leaks before they become costly to business, public health and the environment can only be a good thing.

What other molecules can this technology be tuned to detect?
A new laser-based field instrument developed by a collaborative team of researchers can quantify methane leaks as tiny as 1/4 of a human exhalation from nearly a mile away. The system, constructed around a dual-frequency comb spectrometer, provides efficient, accurate data collection at a fraction of the cost of previous technologies. The research was partially funded by DARPA's Spectral Combs from UV to THz (SCOUT) program. Learn more: https://cires.colorado.edu/news/detecting-methane-miles-away.

Before we start talking about the ethical treatment of AI or the ethics of AI we should probably have a good hard look at our own ethics.

If you think it's deleted, you're kidding yourself. Nothing is ever deleted. They just change the access control so that you can't see it any more.

Waste not, want not!

In today's economy, if you don't have a subscription business model, you don't have s business model. The global economy is designed to waste. That needs to change.
