Opening the stage I was pretty nervous but it went pretty good. There were fast tracks at the beginning and then we got into sandy off-piste. A lot of bumps, probably the roughest stage I’ve ever done. I thought they would have caught us a lot quicker but they didn’t come up to us until 100 kilometers in and then we followed Cyril and Loeb from there. We pushed as hard as we could and came away with a third so I feel really good about it. Tomorrow is rest day and the body needs it!

On the past two days, a lot of things happened in the Silk Way Rally and with the sixth stage contested, MINI John Cooper Works Rally pairing Bryce Menzies / Pete Mortensen (both USA) hold third position in the overall standings behind two Peugeots.
Yesterday, in the fifth stage, Menzies secured the very fine third place, thus also climbing up to third in the overall standings. “The opening sections were really fast and it also went pretty good in regards to the navigation,” said the US American. “Later, the navigation got more difficult but we were able to again gain time in the closing section.”

The seventh stage of the 2017 Dakar Rally, taking the field from La Paz, yesterday’s venue of the rest day, to Uyuni, represented the first part of the marathon stage. Tonight, the pairings have to work on their cars without the support of their teams and mechanics to prepare them for tomorrow’s stage to Salta, Argentina.

The 2015 Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge was less successful for the pairing Lucio Alvarez (ARG) / Gabriel Moiset (ESP) in their new ride. Alvarez (formerly with Ford and Overdrive Racing Toyota at +Dakar Rally Raid - Endurance Rally Racing ) had to retire after stage two as his co-driver suffered severe back pain.

The surprise in the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, however, was Harry Hunt who was quick right from the start. “The past days were incredible and I enjoyed them to the max,” he said. “But they also were tough – the long days and the incredible heat. I never had expected that the MINI ALL4 Racing would prove to be such a good racing car, allowing you to cross extremely high dunes.”

The Dutch crew Erik van Loon and Wouter Rosegaar are now second. (pending protest by Al-Attiyah against his disqualification)
van Loon was happy with his achievements in the Abu Dhabi desert Challenge. “It’s a pity that the final stage was cancelled as the rally was big fun,” said the Dutchman. “On the first days, the field had a similar quality as the one of the Dakar rally. The MINI All4 Racing once again ran flawlessly. I’m very sorry what happened to Nasser.”

Reigning Dakar champion Nasser Al-Attiyah’s win at the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge has been taken away from him due to a minor violation of his car to the race regulations.
The Stewards measured that the suspension-travel was too big. This violation of the regulations was caused due to the strain of the whole suspension during the whole rally. Though the Stewards noticed that the offense was not done on purpose, they disqualified the MINI of the Qatari.
