Overview of many wild orchids found in the Cantabrian Mountains.
This post is written with the intention to give a detailed account of a large number of wild orchids which can be found in the Cantabrian Mountains (Cordillera Cantabrica in Spanish) of northern Spain. To be more specific, those species that I've managed to...

The funny thing about the Strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo) is that the flowers of this year and the fruits of the previous year hang together on the same tree. Personally, I find these light alcoholic berries delicious, but be careful when you´re driving. Especially because some trees have hundreds of fruits and it can be really hard to resist them. Only eat the really red berries because the others are still too hard. The strawberry tree is very common in the valley of the Liebana, in the middle of the Cantabrian Mountains of northern Spain (and part of the Picos de Europa National Park).

The naked man orchid (Orchis italica). These flowers really look like some very happy (smilling) naked men. This orchid is rather rare around where I live, but this year I ´ve been able to find two new populations. This picture shows a close-up of these little naked men.

Last month I had to go to the province of Burgos (Spain) to impart some classes of geology for speologists. Situated in the Merindades and very close to the enormous cave of Ojo Guareña (100+ km long), there exists this natural bridge of 30 metres long and some 20 metres high, which is called the Ventanón (= ver great window). And it is really a window from where you can see the villages of the valley below. Around this bridge there are also some caves which are on my list of caves to explore soon.

Each year, the show caves of Spain attract nearly 5 million visitors, although the last years there is an decrease due to the severe economic crisis. Some years ago I put all the show caves of Spain (that I knew about) together in a blog, just to give the interested tourist a place to find some information about the caves that can be visited. To know quickly which caves are situated near a certain destination they are grouped together in regions. These days I have checked and renewed the information about the caves in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands,  also adding some Google maps with the exact (if possible) location of each cave. The information is in Spanish and in English, specially because a lot of tourists are foreigners.

The largest caves of northern Spain are situated in Cantabria, however, also in the province of Palencia  there are caves with splendid formations and immense halls and galleries.
For lovers of show caves I have made a very extensive list of (all) show caves of Spain and Portugal. The blog has Google maps with the exact location of many caves. The blog isn´t totally finished yet, but the essential info is there.
This photo is taken  by Eliseo Fernandez, member of our caving club.
