2 Weeks to go:
We have noted your song requests. We could put just a little effort into being all touchie-feelie / sharing, but we won't. It's unlikely we'll do the requests in the main set. Trying to get the band to pay attention to anything I have to say is useless until they're all in the same room and I can rip their ** heads off in person. (You listening Mehlman? Moline? Robert? - Darryl being the new guy at least pretends he's still listening to me... I give it one more tour.) Anyway, it IS likely we will use elements of the requests in the 'Pere Ubu Moon Unit' opening set. Which will be more fun anyway than slogging them out at rehearsal in addition to all the new songs and new old songs we're learning. We will be doing all of COS, a few from LFS and then nothing else we've played in the last 10 years. (Unless we get desperate.) Keith's got a new guitar - Fender Squire 6 - which means lots of re-arrangement anyway. Darryl is playing musette this time out as well as clarinet. I'm still toying with the idea of premiering my guitar skills. Robert's got some new toys, he says. The 'X, The Man With X Ray Eyes' underscore, which we will be doing only for the Brighton (Sussex) show, is coming along and unless we screw it up could reach a new level in the underscoring efforts. It will feature at least one new song as well as a series of pretty good game-changer compositions.

Nine hours spent yesterday recomposing the underscore for the French version of 'Carnival of Souls' and breaking in a new technology. During the one fifteen minute break the goals and objects of the current 10 year plan were outlined and the role of the 'Orange Period' summarized. Members present were forbidden to talk to the Americans in the group about it. The hegemony of bass and drums must be smashed for the good of mankind and the abomination that results from bass players and drummers obsessed with the notion that they must play together or that there is in fact any special relationship at all between bass, drums and the rhythm of a song. As discussed in the chapter 'Drums & The Modern Man' in the book 'Chinese Whispers,' even the term 'rhythm section' is a deception. The Singer and the Time Space continuum of the Song is the only rhythm section. Drastic measures may be required - first step may be to prevent the bass and drums from hearing each other. We'll see. Fortunately, Steve and Michele can handle anything thrown at them and excel.

Carnival of Souls Underscore, Paris, Sept 12
The Pere Ubu Film Group underscore performance begins at 9:30pm. Doors at 9pm. The film will be subtitled in French.

Q. What are you going to do about playing in the USA?
A. As far as I'm concerned it won't happen. There are others in Ubu Projex who are set on making it happen. I'm not. This year we're doing the UK and Spain/Portugal. Next year we do the rest of Europe, there's a real possibility of a significant tour of China, stuff is brewing in Russia and South America. We could play North Korea without too much difficulty but unless we pay the American Federation of Musicians for their permission we can't play in America. I will not pay them approve our music. I have other things to do with my life than fight the monkeys in charge.
