iPhone 4S battery problem fix: how to get more than a day's life on a single charge
how I got more than7 days (estimated) 3.5 days (with actual light usage) of standby time on my iPhone 4S (see image 1) in 3 simple steps (by turning off email fetching):
step 1) Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings (see image 2, and this won't wipe out your phone, just resets your iOS5 settings)
step 2) Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendar > Fetch New Data > Push to Off, Fetch to Manually (see image 3)
step 3) Settings > Location Services > System Services > Setting Time Zone to Off (see image 4)
step 4) optional: Settings > Notifications > Calendar > Notification Center to Off
If this still didn't work for you, try deleting all of your email accounts, reboot the phone, and add each one back.
The tradeoff here is that I won't get notified about "You've Got Mail!", but that's about as useful to me as a dead phone, so for me it's well worth the gain battery life.
========
Edit: The original credit for this technique goes to Christopher Breen at MacWorld, who attributed the "Reset All Settings" hint to John Gruber. I was hesitant to try it at first, but turns out it's not a factory reset but more a preferences reset that preserved all of my data. http://www.macworld.com/article/163200/2011/10/troubleshoot_iphone4s_battery.html

You're welcome, Ck, and am glad that your phone is lasting longer now. One other possible reason why your wife's phone is going further is the amount of new emails she gets versus yours per day. But I'd probably just wait for 5.0.1 to see if Apple solves most, if not all, of these issues.4 Nov 2011

If everything need to be switched off - then why do we need iPhone? Might as well just use a normal phone!!
The whole purpose of using the smart phone is to stay connected on different things and instantly.
Apple should publish the timings with all the default APPS turned on, instead of everything is OFF. Else this phone is of no USE!!!9 Nov 2011
Dash, I understand your frustration, but these steps are mainly a temporary stopgap to have a workable phone until Apple releases their iOS 5.0.1 update to fix these battery issues.9 Nov 2011
How has 5.0.1 affected everyone? I had read for some that 5.0.1 even made things worse. My wife and I bought our iPhone 4s phones w/ Sprint almost 2 weeks ago and immediately updated to 5.0.1. It seemed we both had pretty horrible battery life on each of our phones. For me in particular I'm pretty much dealing with a dead phone maybe 5 or 6 hours off the charger. I took mine to apple store Genius Bar last Friday (week after I started using). Their diagnostic said the battery was fine, but the tech saw it drop 2% just during our conversation so he swapped it out for a new one. I've kept the new one at 5.0 and But the new one seems to not have a solid battery either.
I took a lot of screenshots with my last phone before turning it in. I will put a blog post together summarizing what I Tried with the battery and where I was at. Then I will try out these settings and see what they do for my battery. In the meantime, for my wife's phone, I've ordered a mophie juice pack plus. If I can't get the battery to last up to a day with my heavy usage, I'm going to get one too.7 Dec 2011
i had the same issue on the battery of my iPod Touch when i upgraded to iOS 5 but when i installed 5.0.1 the battery life went back to how things were when I first bought it.. 5 days interval between full charges. ;0)25 Jan 2012
