Review by Scott Frederick (DeFy.New York.)

So you think Nike ID studio was a first of its kind? Think again.Hersey is a brand that many in the sneaker world (outside of die hard runners) may have never heard of. According to their website “Hersey Custom Shoes began in 1982 when Bart Hersey (a former factory manager at New Balance) converted his barn into a family run shoe factory. Three years later his product was rated the #1 Running Shoe in the World by Runners World Magazine.” In 2010 a gentleman by the name of Stephen Keoseian took over the company (having been able to spend time working with Bart to learn his skills and secrets for creating quality and comfy shoes). Just considering that most running shoes during that time were no more than 70 bucks and these custom hand made running shoes carried a 150.00 price tag is enough to get those eyes opening real wide. Luckily if you want to experience just what this shoe is all about you can still get your own custom running shoe from Hersey. Check out the 1983 release above and head on over to HERSEY to learn more.

The economy of a Hersey...

It sounds counter-intuitive to say that something that’s custom-made might be less expensive than something that’s mass-manufactured and sold off the shelf. But in the case of your Hersey shoes, it may be true, at least in the long run. Here’s why…

One equals more

When you wear out the soles of a pair of mass-manufactured shoes, you have to throw the shoes away, even if the other parts are still in good shape. When you wear out the soles of a pair of Herseys, we’ll simply replace those soles for a fraction of the cost of a new pair of shoes. On average, our customers are able to resole their Herseys four times, sometimes even more.  In one case, we kept putting new soles on the same pair of uppers for ten years (and 7,000 miles!) until finally there was nothing left to attach them to.  As long as we can put new soles on your Herseys without compromising the support you need, we will.

Quality lasts longer

We use the finest materials we can find for shoes, which we craft by hand right here in the U.S.  We also use techniques such as double-reverse flare foxing (not possible in a mass-manufactured shoe), which not only give you more stability, but also add to the longevity of your Herseys.

Keeping the doctor away

Shoes that don’t fit the people wearing them, or that don’t take into account individual needs, often cause or enable injury in any number of places within the body. Back and other alignment problems, including stress fractures, can result from improper shoes. In other words, cheap shoes can lead to expensive medical bills. Preventing and even correcting such problems is possible with shoes that are right for you.

We always have your model

After we make your first pair of Herseys, we keep your lasts and specifications. So, when you want more of the same, we’ll make them.  You won’t find yourself paying for shoes you can’t resole and that may go out of production at any time.

We’ll get it right

We do our best to make you perfect shoes the first time. But if they’re not, send them back and we’ll do our best to get it right. The big companies can’t do that.

Check out some of our Customer Testimonials...

“I have been a customer since Hersey DAY 1. I ordered my original Hersey shoes from Bart by post, providing measurements I took myself, and have never had problems. I have lived and run in the USA, UK, France, Italy and South Africa. Hersey shoes have taken me through to the finish in twenty Two Oceans, three Comrades and nearly 100 marathons. So, a big thank you and a top tribute to Hersey Shoes.”
Michael Worne…South Africa

“Now, I’m not a runner, but I put at least a runner’s stress on my narrow 14AAA feet when I’m on the job as a TV news cameraman. I’m often out in the field carrying 25 to 35 pounds of camera on my shoulder, and another 10 to 15 pounds on my waist. When you include all of that gear with the 195 pounds of body that my flat arches shoulder, then you can begin to understand what could be going on in my spine, knees and feet. Since I started wearing your shoes about 10 years ago, I’ve needed to buy only 3 or 4 pair. I need no surgeries, no chiropractor, only the very reliable podiatrist Richard Blake to mold my feet, and prescribe my orthotics, and my custom Hersey shoes. As it turns out, these are the cheapest shoes I’ve ever owned. Three pair are still active: the oldest for gardening, the 2nd oldest for hiking and covering dirty stories like fires and mud slides, and then my current everyday pair for normal use.”
John Gammon . . . Oakland, California

“You have been making my shoes for 14 years now. By the time we reach the new millennium, I will have logged well over 25,000 miles in my Hersey Customs. I thank you.”
Pete Malinowski . . . Beverly, Massachusetts

“I choose to wear your shoes and not worry about big company sponsors because Hersey Customs are the best for me, and I cannot sacrifice having the best in order to get “free” shoes that are mainly of a flashy nature. That’s basically what I tell people when they ask why I wear your shoes — because they are the best. I owe you many thanks for providing me footwear that has allowed me to excel and has kept me injury free.”
Curt Clausen . . . U.S. Olympic Racewalking Team

“I would conservatively estimate that over the past 16 years I have purchased at least 250 pairs of shoes from you, and I consider them one of the best investments I have ever made. Between running and racewalking, I have logged more than 68,000 miles and 30 marathons, thanks to the correction you built in for my severe over-pronation problems. I have always been impressed that you are determined to make certain that the customer is completely satisfied.”
Russell K. Smith . . . Houston, Texas

“Your shoes are the best. Nothing can compare. This is pair #5.”
Carl Lochard . . . Cleveland, Ohio

“Your shoes continue to be outstanding. Enclosed is payment for pair #6.”
Carl Lochard . . . Cleveland, Ohio

“I’m sure you don’t remember, but I started buying Herseys in 1988, and I use them almost exclusively running mountain trails here in Southern California. Of course, the fit is superb, but the way they perform is even better. The carbon rubber trail sole works very well on dirt trails at lower elevations, and it really sticks to the high country granite trails. I’ve kept all my toenails for 10 years now, and I’ve averaged 57 miles a week, including a weekly 22-mile run. All of this has been in your shoes. I’m looking forward to the next 10 years.”
Ted Winters . . . San Pedro, California

“As you know, I have extremely difficult feet — very bony and sensitive. Your shoes have enabled me to keep walking four miles every day. In fact, I can almost keep up with my husband, David (Hackworth).”
Eilhys England . . . Greenwich, Connecticut

“As an ex-grunt, I have at least a million miles on my feet. Your shoes are letting me try for the next million . . . and keep up with my wife.”
David Hackworth . . . Greenwich, Connecticut

“Just a little shoe update: my Herseys are wonderful!! I have now done several long runs, including a three-hour road run, with absolutely no blisters. I won my age group for the first time, in the La Luz trail race up the Sandia Mountains a couple of weeks ago. My feet, which are extremely mechanically challenged, felt good. In fact, they felt the best in I don’t remember when.”
Lynn Asbury . . . Albuquerque, New Mexico

“In the past, I suffered foot and leg pains that I eventually discovered were due to mass-manufactured shoes. I tried every brand on the market, but no matter how much I paid for them, none were comfortable and all made my pain more pronounced. As you know, jogging, walking and working out on my treadmill mean the world to me. I don’t know what I would do if, God forbid, you ever went out of business. I owe you a great debt of gratitude.”
Charlie Marqusee . . . Boca Raton, Florida

“Well, my Herseys came on Thursday, I wore ‘em to work on Friday, and then on Saturday, off we went in the 24-hour race. During the event, I saw many of the veterans stop to cut the toe boxes off their shoes . . . even huge blisters off their feet! On Sunday morning, after more than a hundred miles, my new Hersey Customs were still intact, and I had no broken skin. Thirteen years later, my house is full of Herseys, so I’m thinking of adding on. ”

"World's #1" Running Shoe...

Until the mid-1980s, the annual shoe issues of the major running magazines actually judged the quality of each year’s entries. That all changed after Runner’s World ranked the Hersey Original third in 1984 and then proclaimed the Hersey DPS to be the absolute best in 1985…in both the women’s and men’s categories!
Everyone was shocked, especially the giant running shoe manufacturers. They put so much pressure on the magazines that juried shoe issues were done away with forever.
Nowadays, very few people remember that most unlikely event, so just to prove it, we display the magazine cover and other photos on our website. (That’s our Hersey on Jaclyn Smith’s foot.) The point is that an unknown cobbler in a small town can make as good a shoe for you as a famous mass-production corporation can.
Or even better.

Ordering a Hersey is easy...

The first time you order shoes from us, we will need some info about you as well as accurate measurements and tracings of your feet. All custom shoes will incur a onetime last and pattern fee of $135.  We have successfully produced thousands of custom-made shoes for customers we have never laid eyes on. Only if you have a severe foot-related health condition, like rheumatoid arthritis or diabetes, or an actual deformity of the foot, would we need to measure you inn person or have you get a cast made. If this is your situation, let us know and we’ll work something out.

How to Order your Custom Herseys:

1. Register for a new account by clicking here: http://www.herseycustomshoe.com/my-account/

2. Once you register you will be asked a series of questions about how you will be using your shoes and your body type.  Be sure to answer these questions as accurately as possible because they will be used to create your shoes.

3. Next, choose your shoe.  Customize the shoe to your liking and add it to your shopping cart.

4. New customers need to mail their foot trace to US.

5. Click finish to continue and submit.

6. At this point it is time to check out and choose your payment options.

At any time you can go back to change your foot tracings.  Do this by going into your profile in “your account” or by clicking on “view cart.”

Instructions for measuring & tracing your feet:

While it’s very important that its done correctly, measuring your feet is not as difficult as you might think. If you follow these instructions, you can do a good job.

1. Place a piece of paper larger than your foot on a firm, flat surface (not a rug). Letter size (8.5 X 11) paper works well for up to size 14 feet.

2. Wearing the socks that you intend to wear in your shoes, stand upright on the paper. If you wear orthotics, please be standing on top of them.

3. Using a standard size pencil or pen, have someone else trace the outline of each foot, being sure to hold the pencil perpendicular to the paper.

4. Starting at Point A (the back of the arch where your heel and arch meet), angle the pencil to follow the contour of the arch, then trace this line to Point B. (See illustration.)

5. With a cloth measuring tape, slide the tape under your forefoot at the widest point and measure the full circumference. The tape measure should be comfortably snug on the foot. If you wear orthotics, the tape should run UNDER them.

6. Slide the tape to Point A, the back of the arch. Measure the full circumference from this point around the top of your foot where the top eyelet on your shoes would be. Again, if you wear orthotics, please include them in the measurement.

Custom-made vs. Custom-fit

A custom-made shoe is made only for you. In fact, it is designed for you, taking into consideration your own biomechanics, idiosyncrasies, fitness level, and the activities in which you will be wearing it. It is unlike any other shoe in the world, even the one on your other foot. We’re best known for padding the feet of people who like to run: weekend joggers, trail runners, iron-man competitors, and the nutty ultramarathoners who may pound their feet for days at a time. But many of our customers are people who simply like to be comfortable doing whatever they do, especially if they have a problem that off-the-shelf shoes make worse. Nothing makes us feel better than to make a pair of shoes that alleviates the pain of someone with a serious health or bio-mechanical condition.

The Difference:

Custom-made is very different from what some store clerks will call custom-fit, as they dig through the stacks for a pair of mass-produced shoes that just happen to fit your feet. Each Hersey Custom starts with the construction of a last and pattern designed just for you. Then we use the last to make the kind and style of shoe you want, building the uppers and the soles exactly to the specifications that you need.  Because we hang on to your last, we never run out of your favorite model of shoe. We can make more anytime you want, and we can resole your old Herseys for a fraction of the cost of a brand new pair of store-boughts.

Things the big guys can’t do:

-Double-Reverse Flare Foxing. You may notice that the material in the back of a Hersey is folded out and stitched to the top of the midsole. It’s called Double-Reverse Flare Foxing, and it adds strength, width and stability to the shoe while reducing the chances of pronating or supinating. Mass-manufacturers don’t do Double-Reverse Flare Foxing because they can’t. It has to be done by hand.

-Different size shoes for different size feet. It’s very common for a person’s own feet to be different sizes. But have you ever tried to buy two different size shoes in a store without buying two pair and shuffling them around? If you buy a pair of Herseys, each one of your shoes will be the exact size and shape that your foot and your body need it to be. We can do this because we make one shoe at a time, not thousands.

Other custom things we can do:

▪ Specially shaped toe box for “Morton’s Toe” and other toe problems.
▪ A totally non-leather shoe made of 1.5 Clarino® synthetic leather for those who prefer the latter.
▪ Size adjustment for orthotic inserts. If this applies to you, make sure you measure your feet while standing on top of the inserts.
▪ A “wear plug” for heel-strikers that can be replaced at minimal cost when the back edge of the outersole wears thin even though the rest of the sole is still good.
▪ A choice of outersoles. As with all of our materials, we use only the highest quality outer soles we can find. Just tell us what you need; if you don’t see something that suits your needs we maybe able to find one that does.
