Really neat, historic place to visit. Housed zeppelins way back since the 1930's. Did you know that we had flying aircraft carriers 80 years ago? Amazing!!! And they even parked here! There is security at the gate, but you can drive around inside if you have a valid US drivers license and you know where you are going. If cycling, you are required to wear a helmet inside, or they will ticket you.

You'll get five stars when Google provides self driving cars for the research park and NASA.

Too bad the US Government just gave Google a very long term lease of the airfield and surrounding lands.

Moffet was a great duty station. I was there 1962 - 65 in VR-8 USN/MAC Maintenance Squadron and then transferred to VR-7, 1965 - 67 the Flying Squadron when the Connie's were phased out we got C130s. Both 7 & 8 were decommissioned in '67 and the Air Force lost the best maintenance and flight crews they ever had and to this day they have not recovered from it. I retired as a Chief Petty Officer a couple of years later and I still rate VR-7 and VR-8 as the best duty I had in my 22 years in the Navy.

Can anyone tell me why small private planes cannot use Moffett airport when it is no longer a strictly military base? Afterall, the Google boys can park their jet there and the zepplin can park there and periodically the big ww2 bombers can park there for a week and give rides but the place is strictly off limits to the rest of us.
