I was now walking back from the Ooty lake as it was now time for the most awaited part of the trip - the Nilgiri Mountain Train ride. However, it was not meant to start without a twist in the tale. I reached Udhagamandalam railway station almost an hour half earlier to the train departure, but 5 minutes too late. Being a hill train, the capacity and the quota of tickets relaesed even in the unreserved category was limited, and I was not very hopeful of my reservation getting confirmed. The stipulated quota for the unreserved category tickets had already been exhausted including the stading passengers allowed, and the ticket counter was now closed. I was dissapointed but not given up. After a few minutes I walked into the Station Master's office and explained to him my position and requested him to kindly allow me to board the train even as a standing passenger. I must thank him and he helped me to board the train, though only as a standing passenger and asked me not to jump the queue. Also I must appreciate the Station Master and his entire station staff including police. They were truly help to all passengers in every way, especially to the tourists, and they were very particular about the Passenger safety.

The ride on the UNESCO HERITAGE TRAIN started right on time, and the first whistle of the engine as it moved from the platform took me into a nostalgic era, when the train whistle was music and not noise pollution and it made me run behind the pide-piper! Within a few minutes the train started winding down the slopes of Nilgiri Hills meandering along the twists and turns at a speed such that I could have got down the train and teased the engine off in a race. With evry turn the view outside the train coach was getting beautiful. The clouds passing by the hills and tall trees swinging ever so gently and with shyness. The terraced farm fields and tea gardens provided as beautiful vantage as I have seen the whole day. And for sure the hill view cannot be complete without the odd waterfalls gushing down white and furious. Everytime the train whistled through a dark tunnel the coach would lit up inside and be full of excited screaching screams of numerous passengers with a child like exuberance.

The train takes a 10 minute long stop at Hillgrove where the steam locomotive quenches its thirst. It was then I got down and explored the beauty of heritage beast from close quarters. It was hot with glowing coal, shining in all glory. The great care that loco staff were taking care of it coal guzzling and 'Chhuk-Chhuk' cynosure, reminded me that even though the Railways has now become a republic with Diesel and Electric locomotives, the old regality, royalty and elegance of this erstwhile ruler is still intact all thanks to the dedicated darbar it has to take its care.

Another hour and half, I was back in Mettupaliyam from a wonderful flight up the Blue Nilgiris. For sure, it was a visit of a few hours but memories of lifetime!
