E. coli is a dangerous infection that can lead to more serious illnesses and even death. There are ways to diagnose it and treat it, but time is a key factor. In a recent heartbreaking story out of Georgia, a toddler named Grayson Dunham died within a week after showing symptoms of a deadly E. coli infection, after having been misdiagnosed 5 times by the various doctors who saw treated him.

Just because your doctor or any other medical professional made a mistake about your care, it does not amount to medical malpractice. As a plaintiff (the person who brings the claim) you need to establish a few things before you can even file a medical malpractice lawsuit. If you are unsure whether or not you have grounds to make a claim, consider this:

Pennsylvania has passed a new law that could add five years in jail for a driver who causes a crash because they were texting behind the wheel. Those are stiff penalties for distracted driving and it calls into question the responsibility that the person sending the text message has in distracting someone who they know to be driving a vehicle at the time by sending them a text message.

Telemedicine is being lauded as the next step in the evolution of health care delivery. Whether the patient accesses their doctor through an online forum accessible from their home computer screen, or through a kiosk in a clinic or workplace, the patient is talking to the health care provider through a live, video conference arrangement. This kind of interaction is even one step removed from the experience a patient would have when they visit an urgent care clinic at their neighborhood pharmacy. The patient essentially describes their symptoms to the doctor, who then recommends treatment options.

You may have visited a chiropractor to treat back or neck pain after an auto accident, or for the treatment of an old injury that has come back to cause you pain. You may walk away feeling relieved, and you may think that chiropractic care is harmless. However, some chiropractors do not honor their duty of care that they owe their patients. Chiropractors, just like any other medical professional, are required to adhere to the standard of care that is expected in the medical community.

When you hear about a miracle of modern medicine – like when a little boy is given a hand transplant, or when a medical advancement allows someone to live when in years past he or she would have died – it can make you feel encouraged that we live in such an exciting time. Just as medical technology and advancements have brought benefits to patients, they also carry with them the potential for disasters that pose a threat to the safety of patients.

Medical malpractice lawsuits receive a tremendous amount of news coverage when there are large verdicts involved. When there is a lot of publicity about a verdict in the millions of dollars, the general public might begin to get a distorted idea about the truth when it comes to real world medical malpractice lawsuits.

In August 2016, eight lawsuits were filed by people who used the testosterone-replacement therapy, AndroGel. In those lawsuits, the plaintiffs claim they experienced a number of adverse effects, including heart attacks, blood clots and strokes. These suits were approved to go to trial in 2017. United States District Judge Matthew Kennelly has approved four heart attack and four blood clot cases to serve as bellwether trials. After the conclusion of these trials, the thousands of additional plaintiffs with pending lawsuits against the drug’s manufacturer will be able to gauge the viability of their cases.

When a patient becomes ill with an infection after having been admitted to the hospital for the treatment of an unrelated condition (or within three days of being discharged, and with no existing signs of infection, it can be said to be a hospital-acquired, or nosocomial infection. Healthcare-associated infections are preventable and they represent a significant threat to patient safety in a health care environment according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In fact, the CDC reports that on any given day, about one in 25 hospital patients has at least one healthcare-associated infection.
