"Twisty and Mate",  Trichoglossus Haemotodus - the common name is much nicer  Rainbow Lorikeet!!!
This pair have been visiting since last century - truly! They live to a "grand old age" in captivity and a "fair old age" in the wild. They also mate for life - but I have noticed that they do quite a bit of flirting on the side!
These are the only two birds I have encouraged to come close, Twisty because of his deformed beak was the one my husband and I gave special treatment to, putting out a separate small dish of sweet food for him/her (still not sure which is the male!) Mate is rather more timid and takes fright quite easily.
I have never done this before, though. Holding a grape and letting them eat from my fingers. It is rather a special feeling when two wild creatures show this much trust.

Laughing Kookaburra, (Dacelo Gigas) the best known of our Australian birds. We seem to be on the "visiting list" at the moment and often hear two or three of these birds laughing raucously in our trees. One bird will fly in and as soon as it spots another flying towards it it will start laughing, then the second bird joins in and before long the air is rollicking with laughter. Such a wonderful sound!

The assignment for members of the Visions group was "Tiny" for the month of March. I have labelled some of the more obscure ideas. All show things that are tiny.

Rainbows at breakfast time. A point and shoot picture of my morning breakfast companions - there are possibly fifty or more birds crammed in and around the feeder! This happens everyday.
The birds can move easily through the wires - they are there to stop the large birds such as cockatoos, from tossing the dishes down to the ground. When the dishes are empty the birds become rather  violent with them!
All those trees you can see are in my back yard. The house is on one acre of land. No cats, so lots of birds!

For something quite out of the ordinary here is Wire Emu - Dromaius wirius              (tongue in cheek)  as seen on the banks of a local swimming lake. The bird - with a second unidentified species on its back is a sculpture by a local artist Ivan Lovatt - http://www.ivanlovattsculpture.com/    who makes very believable animals and birds from humble chicken wire! There are some talented people around us.

I wouldn't either +Joan Rennie ! That would make an excellent perch for backyard birds <but I would have to spray it with water ever so often :D>

Grass Whistle Ducks (Dendtocygna eytoni) Our Autumn holiday makers are still enjoying the little creek at the bottom of our one acre plot of land. They fly away for a little while and then their distinctive chorus of high pitched whistles announces their return.
The darker duck swimming with them is a Black Duck (Anus superciliosa). Black duck are not nomadic, they are always around.

A new baby in the family!  You may have read my stories about a Rainbow Lorikeet with a deformed beak that has been visiting my veranda for many years - since it was a chick. Well today we were treated to the sighting of a new fledgling - and as both its parents show very little fear of the humans at the table, the chick also shows no fear of us. I could reach out and turn the piece of fruit loaf over to reveal the sultanas on the other side and it did not even flinch! That is not really a good thing though, I might make an effort to make it more wary. Other people might try to catch it - and since the chick is so trusting, they would succeed.
You may wonder why I say it is a chick when it looks to be the same size as the other two birds. The beak is very dark, it is a clumsy flyer and is prone to fall off the veranda rail or the chair back when it (crash) lands. It also keeps up a mournful squeaky whine even when eating!
I do have a problem though, I do not know whether Twisty (eating the fruit loaf) or Mate (standing behind the chick) is the mother! The feather colours do not help identify male from female!
Apologies for not sharing pictures for a while - I had my son's family to look after!! Looking forward to enjoying my own space again now!

Thank you +Paul Cooper I would have preferred not to have used the flash, it has made the colours look rather "hard".

Spring flowers to make you feel brighter! Since those of you in the Northern Hemisphere have had an intense snowy winter and are now heading into Spring I thought I would cheer you along with my spring flowers from down here in Australia!
Summer is almost gone and Autumn, (Fall) is on its way along with wind and lower (only a little) temperatures.

Loved your Spring Flowers Video, especially the way some pictures were perfectly still and others had the breeze blowing.
Cheers

Was fortunate to be able to witness the start of a Sculpture Symposium - I have visited several displays of symposiums in other parts of the country. I shall return to take more photos through the time of the symposium.

Introduction

I was once a teacher of young children and that has given me the ability to teach adults! Its just as difficult keeping the interest of an adult!

My passion is taking photographs and making interesting videos. I tend to take photos in the same way I take video - I shoot so that I can tell a story.

Playing with computers is fun and it can be hard work. I love it! My video editing is done with a computer, my photo editing is done with a computer and my entertainment is also done with a computer. I am lost when it breaks down - which is why I now have four of them!
