One of the talks I gave at Linux.conf.au this year was a quick-start guide to using Docker.

Docker Containers emulate Operating Systems, allowing you to build, manage and run applications and services. And you copy around your application, data and configurations.

I read all this US centric #Sopa stuff cluttering up my internet, and wonder when the penny will drop.

We're watching the decline of a (or 2) once great empire, and the rise of a new one.

While I'll be sad if my friends, acquaintances and the 99% in America get isolated into their rusting fortress America, there is a definite and pressing need for the internet to jettison the USA as its core infrastructure.

SOPA and its related crap has a chance of pushing that liberation ahead - instead of trying to defeat each of these myopic imperialist declarations and eventually finding out that one was snuck in anyway, work to make them irrelevant.

Replace centralized internet infrastructure from the 1960's with stronger self-healing decentralized systems.

I don't think the political environment here is terribly immune to trying (again!) to censor the internet in Australia.

The problem is that internet advocates aren't getting the right message across. It's too easy to say something that average persons interpret as "we like pirating stuff".

Instead, we need to focus on the lack of transparency and accountability on these measures, like the Conroy censorship: what safeguards are there that prevents abuse by individuals? Future governments? Can frivolous claims be used to render user-created content areas too hard to maintain?

And then there's the impact on society and culture: will this trigger a decline of free ideas by way of an increase in self-censorship? What process is there for appeals? Etc.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure we're all Just Doomed (tm).
