We love making games, but we love playing them too, and when not working on our 2D shooter, it's a great time to be a fan of 3D platformers! Obviously Super Mario Odyssey is the big name, but PolyKid's +Poi and Gear For Breakfast's A Hat In Time offer wonderful new, lovingly crafted additions to the genre.

Anyway, here's the Sundae Scoop on what we've been up to when not distracted by new releases:

We're about done sketching out plans for the new player flow, which expands on the menu “setting” and lets you get used to the game before you have to face off against opponents.

There's still more under-the-hood retuning to do before it can be implemented, though. A fair amount of game code is more tied to the “Banana Splat” game mode that it should be, so this work needed to be done anyway, but this way it is getting done earlier and cleaner.

It'll be a bit longer before these efforts bear fruit, but it'll be that much sweeter when players can finally try it out!

Hello, Internet! We finally recovered from our poutine-induced food coma and are back with another Sundae Scoop!

#ROCGameFest was followed by going through all the feedback we received—both vocal and via the feedback form at the event. There were plenty of minor fixes for bugs players stumbled upon (seriously, thank you for that!), but the biggest piece of feedback, by far, was further changes needed on the player select screen.

This was also reconfirmed by the parents' playtest last weekend, where that screen was, by far, the most confusing thing for non-gamer parents. The upside was they got the hang of the game itself quite quickly. As with #ROCGameFest, they appreciated the varied levels and fast battles.

The first round of player screen redesigning involved adding more illustrations to the screen, reinforcing the connection between the option being selected and what it does in the game. While it was received a bit better by playtesters, there is definitely more work to be done.

The next iteration is going to take a bit longer, but the goal is to completely change up the flow with “playable” menus that encourage players to explore their controls before a match starts. In preparation for that, the focus is going to be on decoupling certain basic game mechanics from the Banana Splat game mode, which is something that was going to have to happen anyway for some game modes planned for the future. There is also going to be a lot of menu-specific testing, but given the positive response to the core gameplay at multiple playtests, it is probably safe to take the focus off that for a little while.

The downside is updates are not going to focus as much on adding new stages or items for a little while (though rest assured more are planned), but as many gamers know, bad games often come from developers being too married to their initial ways of doing things, and some of the best experiences out there started with putting the plan aside to try something new.

Lots of us grew up playing games with our siblings, but can your parents handle Banana Split? That was the question we tested this weekend.
