People who ask this sort of question often seem to be the same ones who sat at the back of class at school asking why they had to learn algebra or about Henry VIII or any number of things.
Why do these people never ask why we need to spend sums of money more vast than is devoted to learning on weapons of mass destruction we'll never use? Or on giving tax breaks to the rich? Why is there a reluctance of the part of some to learning simply for the sake of it? Regardless of the benefits to mankind that have come from over half a century of space exploration and the simple enrichment of learning about the origins of the cosmos from which we came and ultimately return to.
David Shukman examines why it's important to continue exploring the Solar System.

Reducto ad absurdum: what if the king and queen of Spain had told Columbus, "there's no need to go west to find the Orient. We have problems here in Spain that need to be solved first."

Offer more mature apprenticeships that pay enough to live on and offer good qualifications and prospects. There are plenty of people who fall outside the 16-24 age range who'd jump at the chance with decades of working life left ahead of them and they'd be more reliable and keen than a kid still living at home.
More than half of employers fear they will not be able to recruit enough high-skilled workers, according to a survey by the CBI.

When I moved onto my street here in Brigg the lights were the old yellow style, after a year or two they were all changed to white ones. They're bright in every direction not just down, they shine in windows at night and blot out the stars and for no reason. I'd much sooner go back to the softer yellow light and see the stars and I'm sure the poor buggers with lights right outside their bedroom windows would too!
Reduced street lighting at night does not lead to more crime or car crashes, a report suggests.

When I lived back in Sutton in Ashfield the one outside my bedroom window mysteriously stopped working too and they never got it working again before I moved out back in '05. Bliss!

A pointless waste of high court time, people never stopped recording tapes, they won't stop ripping either. To put it bluntly, it's unenforceable bollocks...
It's now illegal - again - to copy CDs or DVDs you've bought to put onto your MP3 player, your computer or other devices.

+Marc M money. Shit laws suit the monied ones, good laws don't and since government is controlled by money rather than the people we keep getting more shit.

Just wow!
I've seen some crackers stuff in my time, but as conspiracy theories go this is one of the most out there, far wackier than any 9/11 or chem-trail ramblings. Apparently there are beings living in your TV seeking to control you and what you watch is unique to you as it is created in real time by these beings as they seek to hypnotise you in order to gain access.
It really has to be read to be believed. How could someone be so completely bonkers? Ladies and Gentlemen, clear and reasoned thought has left the building!

STOP LIVE animals being sold as Keychains

Petition: Stop Live Fish, Turtles And Other Amphibians Being Sold As Keychains And Charms In China!

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/tell-a-friend/14003309

In China, live fish, turtles and other amphibians are being sold as keychains and mobile phone charms. For the accessories the animals are fully sealed within small plastic bags, causing animal rights groups to condemn the practice as ‘cruel’.

Most commonly sold outside of train and subway stations in the major cities, the animals can be seen paddling/swimming within a small amount of colored water. Reportedly, the keychains can be bought for as little as $1.50. Within the bag, the animals can survive no longer than a few days. A vendor told CNN, that the animals must be cut out of the bag before the air runs out, otherwise they would suffocate.

Here sharing bad jokes, cool bits of news I spot often to do with science, technology and space. Sometimes a bit of politics thrown in too.
Introduction
Live in Brigg, from Sutton in Ashfield originally, escaped that doss hole for the final time in early 2010. Keen biker, grow my own food and work with electronics for a specialist security firm.
I believe in honesty, fairness and equality and for that reason I hate racism, xenophobia and homophobia etc even though as a straight white male they don't really impact upon me at all.

I have a rare talent for metaphorically putting my foot squarely in my mouth on occasion, but I'm still a decent sort.

Considering it was just a draughty room (the windows didn't shut) with 4 ancient metal framed bunks in it I'd say it was rather over priced, not to mention cheeky calling it a "hotel". To get a shower the hot tap in the bath had to be run for at least 10 minutes before anything like warm came through. Breakfast consists of either cornflakes or toast done in a machine that either barely touches or completely incinerates the bread and don't think you can sneak down late and sit there eating past 9:30 because you'll be chased out by a woman with a vacuum cleaner. To be honest you'd be better off in a tent somewhere!
