Thanks for the comment! Exactly. We actually do interview for emotional intelligence -- that's a significant part of our assessment process. It requires more of an investment in time and resources but is worth the effort when you consider how valuable these skills are in ensuring productivity, customer satisfaction, and employee satisfaction!

It IS too bad that advanced education is out of reach for so many people because I think they can and do provide a host of benefits, much of them non-monetary in nature. However, it's definitely not necessarily a requirement in order to succeed, as you point out! Passion can fuel success, more so than a dozen degrees with the right person and the right job!
