The FEC has released a clean(ish) collection of all 6.7M individual contributions made to political campaigns during the 2015-2016 election cycle so far. There's so much to look at that I'm just going to do it live, looking for patterns that pop out as interesting. If you have any questions (e.g. How much went to Trump? Who gave to both Sanders and Clinton?), post them in the comments section.

Disclaimer: This is going to look a lot like live coding and I'm a slow typist.

The data: http://www.fec.gov/finance/disclosure/ftpdet.shtml#a2015_2016

The tools:
- CSVKit: http://csvkit.readthedocs.io/en/540/
- PostgreSQL: https://www.postgresql.org/
This Hangout On Air is hosted by Bill Morris. The live video broadcast will begin soon.

I'm still trying to get over the initial wow factor, but it's tough to see past "OHMIGOD COLORS AND ROTATION!": http://bl.ocks.org/wboykinm/raw/c43cf9a9fe500276d026/#13.47/41.384095/2.174555/-52.5

But for the moment it's tricky to think of rolling it into everything given the spotty webgl availability on mobile. There are certainly some early bugs, but the team is hunting them down as quickly as they pop up (https://github.com/mapbox/mapbox-gl-js/issues/662).

Bottom line is that this is extremely exciting, and given the support for outside sources and full styling, MapboxGL seems much more developer-friendly and customizable than Google's WebGL framework. I'm psyched.
Mapbox has announced the release of Mapbox GL JS. I've only had a few hours to play with it so far but it already looks to be the most exciting and impressive mapping API on the market. It really does make the Google Maps API look dated, tired and jaded now. Mapbox GL JS allows developers to ...

Moving to a New Gig
After many fruitful years of operating Geosprocket LLC, today I'll be joining the crew at Faraday , working as the lead visualization engineer. This is an exciting time to be working with data science and data design, and I'm psyched to be a part of a talen...

The District Plows Tonight
It will surprise no one in Vermont if I say it's cold tonight. We've got Barrow, Alaska beat at 10pm. It's been that way most of the day and should continue tomorrow. #btv pic.twitter.com/EiVDjEbGwt — Channel 3 Weather (@wcaxweather) January 3, 2014 So I'm ...

A quick walkthrough of mapbox studio classic: selecting an existing style and custom data source, styling the source, and export to a static image. Note that I ran into a problem I wasn't anticipating at the end - the road layer disappeared from my static image! I'm investigating this with the Mapbox crew.

On Reverse-Engineering a Map Stack
I'm going to come right out and say this: You should probably just use Mapbox. How I came to that conclusion is a bit of a longer story. The Scene As a cartographer, I am an unabashed fan of Mapbox . I've been using Tilemill for years, and I love the fully-...
