The FEC has released a clean(ish) collection of all 6.7M individual contributions made to political campaigns during the 2015-2016 election cycle so far. There's so much to look at that I'm just going to do it live, looking for patterns that pop out as interesting. If you have any questions (e.g. How much went to Trump? Who gave to both Sanders and Clinton?), post them in the comments section.

Disclaimer: This is going to look a lot like live coding and I'm a slow typist.

The data: http://www.fec.gov/finance/disclosure/ftpdet.shtml#a2015_2016

The tools:

- PostgreSQL: https://www.postgresql.org/

A quick walkthrough of mapbox studio classic: selecting an existing style and custom data source, styling the source, and export to a static image. Note that I ran into a problem I wasn't anticipating at the end - the road layer disappeared from my static image! I'm investigating this with the Mapbox crew.

I'm still trying to get over the initial wow factor, but it's tough to see past "OHMIGOD COLORS AND ROTATION!": http://bl.ocks.org/wboykinm/raw/c43cf9a9fe500276d026/#13.47/41.384095/2.174555/-52.5

But for the moment it's tricky to think of rolling it into everything given the spotty webgl availability on mobile. There are certainly some early bugs, but the team is hunting them down as quickly as they pop up (https://github.com/mapbox/mapbox-gl-js/issues/662).

Bottom line is that this is extremely exciting, and given the support for outside sources and full styling, MapboxGL seems much more developer-friendly and customizable than Google's WebGL framework. I'm psyched.
