Hello Group, I am a foreigner (Wyoming), but share an interest in TEE. I am a librarian, so I don't have classes for which I am regularly responsible. I have just moved to my current position (HS) this fall. I am curious about how other schools handle phone and personal device use. Our school has a policy that phones are to be turned off during class, but can be used during passing periods. But, in practice, students are allowed to keep their phones in hand or on their desk, and appear to be carrying on conversations via txt. I can't imagine how students can be conducting in-depth research or thinking deeply if they're reaching for their phone every minute or two. Perhaps I am missing something. If you care to share, I'd like to read other schools' policies and any discourse on the topic of student personal technology use in schools.
The exception to the rule is when students are engaged in an activity that takes them beyond the bounds of wireless access we can provide but they are still on school property (a local creek).
