Chris Lintott and Maggie Aderin-Pocock delve into the mysterious world of unidentified flying objects, from flashes in the night sky to supposed sightings of flying saucers. They ask how humanity's drive to understand the phenomena and discover alien life forms has helped to transform people's understanding of the universe.

Help Make next Christmas a less violent one for everybody
The control of the free circulation of weapons will reduce or prevent the militarisation of extremists and save untold suffering by many of the worlds citizens. Ratifying the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) is the first step. It is agreed by 130 countries, ratified by 60 (so far) but needs to be bought into by the largest suppliers of arms in the world. Save our citizens, slash arms sales.

I have often wondered, could something else be causing red shift. If the universe is truly infinite there is an awful lot of matter out there, could this be effecting light that has to travel great distances. Even if this is only a minor effect it could throw the calculations out by quite a bit.
"The farthest galaxy yet seen!" Haven't we heard that one before? (See here and here, for example.) While it's true that astronomers keep pushing farther back i

If the property of inertial mass were to decrease over time so that the intrinsic "rest energy of matter" were to also decrease over time, then electrons would slowly be drawn down into a more intense electrostatic field.  This way photons produced in the past would have less energy imparted to them when they are emitted (or absorbed), than a photon produced in the present.  Our present photons would be comparatively "bluer" resulting in a Cosmological Red shift.

Why should this idea have merit?  Well it would restore the equivalency between matter and radiant energy.  Just as a photon loses energy while traveling through space, so to would matter lose energy while floating in space.  E=Mcc would be valid all the time.

(This idea is in my model described in Youtube use my name to see the videos  John Kulick)

Popular Science have stopped taking comments on their articles in the interest of science and make a strong case for their action. It is a shame that any science discussion can be stifled by the rants of the ill informed or politically motivated few. http://tiny.cc/rc773w

If you look at the table quoted you will se that Hubble was the one who applied the critical 'standard candle' Cepheid variable, this was the key inspiration. Of course it was not as accurate as todays instruments allow and he made mistakes (if Edward Jenner did what he did today he would be jailed) but his inspired insight was the convincer.
Get over it, go discover something new.

Fabulous, Rock on Curiosity.
I notice the writer refers to Curiosity as feminine, has this always been the case and I just did not notice.
NASA’s Curiosity rover has discovered a new patch of pebbles formed and rounded eons ago by flowing liquid water on the Red Planet’s surface al

Traditionally, crafts are feminine (from sea vessels) but rovers masculine (in the NASA program).
