SUGARFISH by sushi nozawa, with multiple locations in Los Angeles, is a different kind of sushi dining experience. Our restaurants serve only traditional sushi of the highest quality based on Chef Nozawa’s style of sushi. Our passion is to carry forward his great tradition and style of food – which many believe is the best sushi there is.

SUGARFISH embodies the philosophy of celebrated sushi chef Kazunori Nozawa, well-known for his Trust Me-style sushi at Sushi Nozawa, which operated in Studio City from 1985-2012. Nozawa shuns “American-style” extravagant rolls and fusion dishes. Instead he concentrates on the purity of his basic ingredients— nurturing relationships with the finest fish purveyors across the globe, cutting his fish with an artisan’s painstaking care, and even making his own fresh soy sauce and ponzu.

3 Things You Must Know Before "Eating" at Sugarfish. 1) Sugarfish is essentially the McDonalds of Sushi. They provide you a menu that contains the #1, #2 and #3. You can order some ala carte items but they seem to discourage that. 2) The wait staff has a built in tip, it's clearly disclosed on the menu. The problem is that this means that the staff really doesn't care about being even mildly friendly. I don't mean nice in the southern grandmother kind of way, but we felt extremely rushed, it was a little weird. When the hostess pointed our table out, she told us to go over there, unlike most restaurants where you are shown to your table. See #1, this really felt like a Japanese fast food restaurant. 3) This is a "sushi" restaurant. Not to be confused with sashimi. If you want sashimi, that's just too bad. They carry many different species of fish and they will serve them to you as sushi but they will not serve you sashimi (except for Tuna and 2 other less common fish). I asked genuinely if they had pre-made all of their sushi and that was the reason for the no-sashimi rule, the waitress was not amused. See #2. I know I said "3 things you must know" but now that you've gotten this far, here are some bonus tips. 4) We ordered the edamame appetizer and we counted 12 soy bean pods on the plate. We would have happily paid more for a serving that would actually feed two adults, but we were so busy laughing that I couldn't get the waitresses attention before we finally left the restaurant. It was seriously comical. We are not snobs nor do we expect large portions, these were comically small servings. 5) We arrived at 6:30pm on a Monday, waited an hour for a table. They don't take reservations (we actually think that is pretty great, but ymmv). When we sat down and asked about sashimi we were told they were out of everything but Tuna for Sashimi. They really really really just want you to order one of their numbered combos. See #1. Honestly I never write this kind of awful review but it was hands down the most hilarious and worst restaurant experience I have had in my entire life. It was as though the soup nazi from Seinfeld had opened a sushi place in Santa Monica and at one point we genuinely looked around wondering if we were perhaps on camera. Unfortunately we were not, so we walked down the street to one of the many other sushi restaurants and had a perfectly mediocre dinner elsewhere.

This is one of the best sushi restaurants I've ever been to! And it's not just because of the sushi itself, but because of the experience. I highly recommend going with either the Trust Me or Trust Me Lite options on the menu. There are a number of items included with each option. As each is ready, it comes from the kitchen. The fish tastes amazing. It melted in my mouth...mmm so good! The prices are very reasonable here. Note: They do not take reservations, but it's worth the wait. Also, they don't deliver, but you can use the Postmates app for that.

Xlnt food. Super fresh, well prepared. The warm sushi rice did not have correct consistency, and fell apart. I remember Nozawa refused to serve me sushi in Studio City because the pot of rice was not right (sashimi only). Proud man of integrity.

Exquisitely simple menu of consistently fresh and luscious fish, with melt in your mouth warm sushi rice. Warning: may be habit forming. Enjoy.

This is my favorite sushi place. If you haven't been, it is a must if you're ever in the LA area. Be prepared to be wowed by their simplicity, quality and flavor. I would recommend the "The Trust Me", you will not be dissapointed!
