Dean Baker is short and to the point … Inequality is not something that just happened. Inequality was engineered by the folks who have power.

In a recent report, John Schmitt and Janelle Jones of the Center for Economic and Policy Research wonder, “Where have all the good jobs gone?” The U.S. workforce is substantially older and better-educated than it was at the end of the 1970s. The typical worker in 2010 was seven years older than in 1979. In 2010, over one-third of US workers had a four-year college degree or more, up from just one-fifth in 1979. Given that older and better-educate...

Brad DeLong argues that Erskine Bowles “flunked” his audition for the job of Treasury Secretary. I don’t think he would be a good Treasury Secretary, because I think he failed catastrophically as co-chair of the deficit-reduction commission. … Bowles as co-chair of the deficit-reduction commission had two missions: 1) His primary mission was to corral Republican legislative support for a commission proposal that could serve as a long-run budget-b...

A cover story in this week’s issue of The New York Times Magazine discusses the anti-poverty policies pursued by the Obama administration. And so in 2009 and 2010, the Obama administration put a tremendous amount of money, very quickly, into the hands of low-income Americans. As part of the Recovery Act, the administration extended the eligibility rules for existing programs like food stamps and unemployment insurance, and the combination of the ...

Mark Thoma lets loose a cri de coeur regarding the unceasing misrepresentations of the budget problems facing the United States. … According to this narrative, our budget problems have nothing to do with the Bush tax cuts, higher spending on the war, and the the loss of revenue and higher spending on social programs from the recession, it is Social Security and Medicare that are the problem. As for the recession itself, it wasn’t financial execut...

Rortybomb wonders how government policies related to higher education have evolved from the Morrill Act to the “pain funnel.” It’s amazing how quickly we’ve gone from using government resources to enact the democratic visions of the Morrill Act, the GI Bill, and the California Master Plan, three of the greatest pieces of legislation our country has passed, to using government resources to enact a vision premised on eliciting pain. Through a funne...

The surprising benefits, to oneself and to society, of living alone

I was in Philadelphia for work and needed to have additional materials printed for a presentation. I went into this store since it was near my hotel. Big mistake. The store was run down, and the staff was inattentive, rude, and busy fighting very loudly with each other. The printers/copiers were inoperative, and a manger was needed to get them to work. In the process, the manager needed to edit my file on a a store computer, which was infected with a virus that was passed to my usb drive. This required me to spend a good amount of time later that night addressing that problem. All this for 100 copies of a two-sided document. Stay away.
