[don't comment unless you read to the end] I've heard a lot of people say it to me and I let it slide, but seeing people say it to other friends who are long struggling, I can't stand by and let this keep happening. It might be true for you, but please stop telling depressive people that "happiness is a choice" that "you have the power to shape your own perceptions" that "positive thought creates a positive world". Also please stop saying that antidepressants are tools to make us all sheeple (I am not discounting alternative non-prescription approaches here). Some of us would not be alive and could not function without some kind chemical assistance (everything is made of chemicals, I'm not discussing natural vs synthetic here). If you want to believe in the power of positive thinking for yourself, fine. I know that everyone has felt depressed and hopeless and struggled at one point or another in life, but that is not the same thing as suffering from chronic depression. True depression cannot be wished away, it can't always be fixed by daily nature hikes, healthy diets, friendly gatherings, puppies, kittens, and gratitude journals. It cannot ever be talked away in therapy in many cases, either. The fact is that we are all machine sacks of chemicals and impulses, and some of us are not built exactly right. There is a spectrum and some are more imbalanced than others. Some are cases are more degenerative than others. There are many kinds of depression. Telling us that "happiness is a choice" is saying "you're just not trying hard enough". It is saying "your suffering is all your own fault". You are telling someone with an illness that they only have themselves to blame. That is factually untrue. "Oh, you have cancer? Why'd you go and do that?" It is also telling them not to go to a doctor when they have a potentially fatal illness. Yes, some people are depressed due to rough pasts or unhealthy lifestyles or unhealthy attitudes or environments. But many of us have an actual lifelong biological health condition. If you want to tell me that positive thought will fix that you'd better be able to do it telepathically because you have rewired your brain so well by thought alone. [shareable]
