Featured Product of the Week!

When people think of Tamarack they often picture our big ticket items like our Fisherman’s Table or our hand-crafted furniture and we are very proud of that fact, but sometimes our smaller crafts can feel under appreciated. So this week we will be doing a feature called Stocking Stuffers! Showcasing our smaller, but equally well made pieces of affordable art!

These items are hand-crafted ornaments from Paula Queen (the porcelain) and Elaine Bliss. (the stars) They would make wonderful unique gifts. You can stop in to see their wide selection of colors and patterns and as both these artists are studio artisans you will have the chance to see them hard at work.

Our Featured Artist: Kathy M. Hanby works with stained glass, sculpting the substance into vibrant works of living art. Her work shines with the unique inner light that only hand blown glass can have. We have her pieces for sale outside our theater and she is featured in our current gallery show Whimsy. This article by Robin Johnson Belmear tells a little of her story, and gives you the chance to do something we can’t often do in our modern world…get to know the person behind the crafts.

PARADISE FOUND:
In her Lost Creek studio, glass artist Kathy M. Hanby finds artistic inspiration from her little piece of heaven on earth.

Arriving at the Hanby’s home, you realize you have discovered an extraordinary haven tucked away in the valleys of Lost Creek, WV. Perhaps it’s the fact that Kathy has to pick you up a short distance from her home and shuttle you via the family Jeep. Maybe it is the trip down the steep hillside through the WV wilderness, or it may well be the wonder of their remote utopia when you reach the bottom of the hill. The remarkable beauty of this West Virginia paradise is the inspiration that motivates Kathy to create her unique works of glass art.

Kathy was familiar with the beauty of stained glass but never imagined she would be able to create such works of art. Her cousins in Hedgesville had been creating stain glassed designs through their studio, Amingo Glass, Ltd., for over 30 years. “I cut my first piece of colored glass and I was hooked. I spent many hours teaching myself and asking questions of anyone I knew that worked with glass.” Working on her front porch, Kathy was putting antique reproduced postcards in between glass wrapped with copper foil. “Then my husband built me a small building to work in. I would get catalogs with supplies and I still use a lot of the same companies I started with.”

Her studio today was inspired by her father, Eugene Moore. A wood carver, her father was an artist in his own right. He would visit the farm several times a year and teach her how to carve wood. He created a 9 ft. totem pole on the property which succumbed to nature several years ago. Together, they began building a dream cabin for her father to stay in during his visits. Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with cancer and passed away before the cabin was ever finished. Through a labor of love, Kathy and Gary finished the cabin which became her current studio. “His spirit is with us there”.

To make her work unique, Kathy has developed her own decorative soldering technique. She displayed her work for the first time during an “Art Opening” at a gallery in Berkeley Springs. “I was on my way”, she said. She was juried into Tamarack in October of 2002 and most recently she was juried into the Dickerson Art Gallery. She was also named in the Top 15 favorite Tamarack artists in WV Living’s summer 2011 issue. Her body of art work is extensive from the whimsical to the grand. Inspired by an old glass terrarium that hung in her bedroom, Kathy has recently recreated the idea into a line of stunning table top conservatories.

Looking out the windows of her studio, it is easy to see where she gets her inspiration. The beauty and colors of nature, the solitude of the setting, and the love of family and friends spark her imagination to create some of the most unique pieces of glass art found in WV, or anywhere for that matter!
