Can you help me spread the word about this scholarship so we can change the diversity in Big Data? #StrataHadoop
We have a lack of diversity in technology. In my experience, the issue is a question of supply and not demand. When you get into specialities like Big Data, minority populations go from a small percentage to outliers. Of the thousands of students I've taught, less than ten have been ...

In Big Data, we don’t just have a last mile problem; we have a first mile problem too. Kafka solves this problem.
In telecommunications, there is the term “last mile”. It refers to getting the connection to customer. It's the last mile between the company's infrastructure and the customer's location. We have similar issues in Big Data. We don't just have a last mile problem; we have a first mile problem too ...

I have been getting your emails and they all seem to make sense. However, did I understand it correct that you believe all big data engineers need to be to use Java? I come from a heavy SQL, MPP data warehousing and BI background. With having done shell scripting from my days when I was a DBA I ...

Q and A: Can a Big Data strategy be defined by someone who doesn't know the technology behind it?
How good a Big Data strategy can be defined by someone that doesn't know the technology behind it? (By knowing I don't mean being able to configure it, but at least knowing its features, context, if it's growing in market share, how it can be integrated with other tools).

To Cloud with Big Data messaging or not? I compare Kafka and Google Pub/Sub.
Some of the contenders for Big Data messaging systems are Apache Kafka, Google Cloud Pub/Sub, and Amazon Kinesis (not discussed in this post). While similar in many ways, there are enough subtle differences that a Data Engineer needs to know. These can range from nice to know to we'll have to ...

See my journey from small data and distributed systems to Big Data.
Everyone's Big Data journey starts somewhere. We're often given stories of outright mastery, but I want to tell you how I got started with Big Data. Each of these stories about mastery forget or omit their humble beginnings. This is my story from my humble beginnings.

Solving the last mile problem with Kafka by creating a real-time dashboard powered by the REST proxy
In the first post in the series, I talked about Big Data's first and last mile problems. I showed how the first mile problems could be solved with Kafka. In this post, I'm going to talk about the last mile problems. Big Data Last Mile. With Big Data we're faced with finding value in large ...

There’s a sad thing that’s limiting our growth as programmers. We don’t invest in ourselves like other professions.
There's a sad thing that's limiting our growth as programmers. We (programmers) don't invest in ourselves like other professions. The business person will happily spend $3000 to attend a class to improve a part of their business. The marketing person will spend $3000 to attend a class to improve ...

Crawl, Walk, Run with Big Data. Attacking a Big Data project with an all-or-nothing mindset leads to an absolute failure. I highly suggest breaking the overall project into more manageable phases. These phases are called crawl, walk, and run.

Companies and individuals often come into Big Data thinking everything is cheap. After all, the entire stack is open source, right? Well, some things are cheap and some things are more expensive. Software. One of the important distinctions with Hadoop is that it isn't an open source knock off of ...

Q and A with 20 committers and users of Apache Beam. See how to use it or if you should use in production.
Apache Beam just had its first release. Now that we're working towards the second release, 0.2.0-incubating, I'm catching up with the committers and users to ask some of the common questions about Beam. Each committer and user is sharing their own opinion and not necessarily that of their ...

Creative Engineer
Introduction
I am a Creative Engineer in the Northern Nevada/Reno area with many years of experience in creating products and helping companies improve their software engineering.

I do both professional and personal projects. Personal projects like the Million Monkeys project went viral and gained international notoriety. My interviews appeared in such prestigious places as the Wall Street Journal and Fox News with the full list on my resume. I was invited to submit a paper on the topic to Significance which was published.

I strive to provide local developers with the resources to learn new technologies and improve their skillsets. Currently, I sit on the Board of Directors as the Director of Member Services for theNorthern Nevada Software Developers Group. Additionally, I have a position on the Technology Advisory Committee at Morrison University in which I advise the college on appropriate curriculum for technical degree programs.

At the Northern Nevada Software Developers Group, I coordinate all meetings and speakers. Also, I give various presentations; a list of the topics, presentations and example code are on my online resume, my Slideshare page, and my YouTube channel.

The art on the first floor isn't very good. The second floor makes up for it, but doesn't merit the six dollar per adult entrance fee.
