The Importance of Taking Responsibility

Did you start reading the above quote and expect a positive, feel-good ending? Sorry if I disappointed you (or offended you), but I think there's a lot of truth in this saying. Oftentimes, the outcomes in our lives are a direct result of our own choices.

When things don't go according to plan, most of us are quick to look for a reason outside of ourselves and assign the blame elsewhere. However, we generally need to look no further than in the mirror. Evaluating the situation and determining how our choices and actions contributed to the outcome is called taking personal responsibility. And it’s a necessary, healthy life skill.

This isn't to say that things don't happen outside of our control or that outside forces don't impact our best-laid plans, because we all know they do. But we also must accept that we influence the outcome too. We're destined to repeat our mistakes in the future when we’re not willing to assess our own contributions to what went wrong.

It takes courage to accept responsibility for our role in less-than-desirable circumstances, but by doing so we enable ourselves to learn from our mistakes and make wiser decisions in the future. And that's exactly how we make our lives better.

Life free of junk
Settling is a choice. Having an OK life and tolerating things in it just because others do is a choice. You don’t have to bend under the circumstances – you should make them bend around you by taking control over your life and taking responsibility for the choices you make. Life doesn’t suck “just because” - it sucks when you make no effort to make it otherwise.

Sometimes it is as simple as that. Sometimes you just have to let go of what’s holding you back in order to move on to better conditions, conditions you will feel more comfortable in and feel happier. You don’t have to live a life where at every turn you suppress your own happiness in order to maintain the status quo. Sometimes, your life needs a catharsis.

[Most likely] Have to go:
Toxic people. It can even be your “friends” or people you are used to interacting with just because you have always done so. Think very carefully about it: do you have people in your life that after they are gone you can’t help but feel bad despite being in a good relationship with them – like having a bad aftertaste after the interaction. Relationships are supposed to help us, lift us up.. and if you have someone that brings you down, intentionally or unintentionally, maybe that relationship needs revision.

Fatalistic views. Your own negative self is your number one enemy in life. What we think very soon becomes what we say and what we say very soon becomes what we believe. If you make yourself believe that life is unfair, full of bullshit and fake people that’s all you’ll see around you all the time. You will concentrate on seeing just that. Life is many things, and yes, there is a lot of crap we all deal with on a daily basis but there are also a lot of good things and good people all around us. There are a lot of things to be celebrated and be inspired by all around us – but only if you open your eyes to see them.

Unhealthy body. Your body is your home, the only one you have and you should treat it with respect. It’s not about looking good, far from it, it’s about being able to use it, feeling comfortable and feeling good in it. It doesn’t matter what size or shape you are as long as your body is healthy and you have done everything you can to maintain it this way. Fitness isn’t about muscle or a slim physique - it’s about freedom of movement and control.

Needless stuff. When you are surrounded by clutter of things that you haven’t used in a while, things that don’t even have a use you are likely to have chaos in your mind, too. Clear space helps you keep a clear mind, in the long run bringing order to your life. When you have only what’s important in your house and when everything is in its place you learn to project it onto your life, making better choices and picking what matters over what you just want to have. By owning few items you can concentrate on your own self more, putting value in other things like relationships, knowledge and experiences.

I am an exciting and honest person - the type you want to have as a friend and keep close. I have somewhat sharp and sarcastic sense of humor, interested in DNA and genetics and believe in Aliens (ok, scratch aliens since according to the latest updates this universe is just a computer simulation) :)
