Cabin Fever

Now that winter is starting to fade again into history, I start to get that feeling I do each year, you know it… Time to shake off the cabin fever and find your need for speed!
I know as the season starts to approach I will be seeking out the areas air shows and see if I can again get my speed fix on. There is just something about the high speed pass that gets your heart pumping, the adrenaline flowing, just makes you feel alive!
This was just one of hundreds of images I caught last fall at the NSA Memphis air show.

Have a Coke
I have been playing with my iPhone camera quite a bit, and have been amazed at the quality of the images from this little device. I was just picking up a couple candy bars the other day and saw this cooler setting by the checkout filled with ice and bottled Coke and Sprite, I could not pass this chance by to grab a shot. So out comes my iPhone and I make the shot and out the door I go, I sat for a moment in the car to review it… I really love how sharp of images I can get even in low light. I processed the shot originally for Instagram and got some “love” on it.
I have reprocessed the image in “Photoshop CS5″ and “Flare for Mac” to get it ready to be displayed here on my website.

Majestic View

I just went back over images I had shot last year and I keep stopping on this one, it is a multi shot pano made up from 7 images taken on a tripod at 1/10th sec f/11 ISO 160 with a Canon 7D and my 17-40mm f/4 L lens that I captured last spring when we were in Gatlinburg, go ahead and click on it to see the details up close. I used Photoshop CS5 to stitch together the individual images. I used Nik Color Efex 4.0 for the tonal contrast adjustment to bring out the details even more.
I am looking forward to when we can revisit this area there was so much to photograph everywhere you turn, the spring colors were just coming into their own when we were there. I bet we might need to try the fall of the year for even more colors.

Digital Painting
New and fun stuff here at the darkroom, I have been a fan of oil and water color painting for a long time, so after seeing a class by Fay Sirkis I was hooked. I needed to try this for myself. She provided the tips and tricks I needed to get going on the project. She has a great style and I used some of the tricks to produce this image from New Orleans I shot last fall when we were there. I have the image "clickable" so you can see a bit of the detail included in this work. I am going to try a bunch more as this is a very fun thing to do in the digital darkroom, all brush strokes are reproduced one at a time just as if I had painted the image from scratch. I will be trying this with some pinup work in the near future.

A Head Above

I know the title is corny but it fits. I have been trying out the new Nik Color Efex Pro 4.0 plugin for Photoshop and Lightroom, and I think I can say the new version is a head above the old ver 3. I like the way you can now stack filter effects in the edit window without having to go back to Photoshop each time to add more effects.

I was using one of the images I had shot at the West Tennessee Safari Park we went to last sumer to try out the effects, I came across this handsome fella and wanted to share him with everyone, The border effect was from Flare for Mac I love the effect it gives my images. It's a great addition to all of the gadgets I have at my disposal, the way photography has evolved it fascinating we have come so far since the darkroom with the smelly chemicals and the timers and safe lights... I do miss it some times but the results I can get now took me days of work and never looked this good. The retro looks we are doing are just a few things I love, bring on the grunge boarders, the cross-processing, the light leaks ;) It's a wonderful time to be a photographer.

AFTER HOURS

Well I see that the new year has brought new and HOT things to the studio, we worked out a late night session and was getting some stellar stuff. I see this as a start to the future we had a great time and booked an additional session, I just love finding girls that are so eager to shoot and throw caution to the wind. Last night session is now in the edit phase and I am liking what I have been seeing.
as always it starts off a bit slow but we soon were in the grove, I will be adding a couple to the portfolio.
The cloths come off the water is cold and the images keep happening, that just what we need to make the images that make people do a double take. I also see after using the Tether Tools for a little over a month I don’t know why or how we did this before, damn it is wonderful to be able to see the bigger images come in after you shoot, I am able to keep an eye on critical focus and lighting and clothing mishaps as they happen.

Big Glass

So what do photographers with big projects do when there current lens line up leaves them short? I know I don’t have the funding to run out and buy a multi thousand dollar lens for the next field trip (I sure would love to lay claim to some) but I know it’s just not feasible to make an investment of this size and only use it a time or two during the year, the rest of the time it’s just sitting in its case and you own bragging rights.
I have found a way to look pro even if you don’t have a pro budget, a fellow in Memphis who was a avid photographer himself set out to rent lenses to fellow photographers, Roger at LensRentals is just the man… I have met him personally and he is nothing short of awesome. Now without the cost associated with ownership you can have that dream lens for a special project.
He has the entire line of Canon, and yes Nikon lenses and even camera bodies to rent for as little as a weekend or longer. If you get a chance to visit his site at LensRentals.com you can get started shooting with the big boys.

Additional Branding

Continuing with the new logo branding, I have found another place to make it seen when in public, I have added it to my iPhone lock screen as you can see in the image I added the phone number and a lock to help with its integration. I feel if I can get my brand out there more I will have additional business gained from the additional exposure.
I know I am doing a good job with the car and it’s markup when you talk to people in town now I hear that they have seen the car and are identifying it with me. My new logo shirts are ready to pick up and I will show them off soon, thanks to Mockingbird Threadworks for the embroidery work.

iPhone Frenzy

Now that the world has global warming, and the world ends this year… I still see that the new iPhone camera has made such an impact as to the style of images that are captured. Now the camera EVERYONE has with them all the time is the one built into their phones. I love the way the little gem of technology has grown, now with so many apps for editing your images just about anyone can get very good results, this leaves me to wonder as to the fate of the “big boys toys” DSLR’s. I find myself also shooting with my phone camera quite often. Now one thing all these would be photographers cannot do with there new toys is composition, thats about all that stands between us and them… we know how to frame the image to make the most impact.

Image Branding
Well as this is a new year and things have been going very well in the studio. I am quickly working up some new promotional materials I found moo.com as a great outlet for all kinds of different stuff… I have already gotten some of there round logo stickers, they rock I have got them on a bunch of gear, I like the way they look and it lets everyone know that this stuff belongs to the studio.

I also have in the works some of there mini cards, I am able to use images from my portfolio and keep a bunch of different ones to hand out to potential clients.

The more that I look at there stuff the more ideas I am getting, I can really see myself acquiring more business from the new way you can sell yourself.

Resolutions we all make them this time of year, the oh we are too fat need to diet one the do this , do that type of promises we make to ourselves. Now I can only think of one that should come to mind this time of year, or any time for that matter… Now those of us that have been shooting photos forever can remember shoe boxes full of negatives in the closet or down in some dark basement. But that was yesterday, the old way of keeping those cherished moments safe incase you needed one printed again.
But now, we jump ahead a few decades and what do we have? all of these precious moments are now stored on your computer, I know I have images in digital format going back to 2005 when I started shooting digital, they pile up and even tho I have them organized by date and place I shot them and subject. Now what do we do? how many of us have a backup plan in place, and know it can recover if, or better said WHEN IT FAILS.
So I pose this to you for this fine new year 2012 BACKUP! before your moments are gone in a flash… The external backup drives are so inexpensive now that it would not break anyones budget get one larger than you need currently as over the next couple years we will be getting higher mega pixel cameras needing more space… and PLEASE do resolve to make it a part of your new year to back up the memories.
