Today, "It's Not Over" publishes in paperback, with a new afterword looking back on the year. A year ago, when it first published, I warned of "victory blindness" — chapter 1 — the dangerous illusion that we’d won, a "kind of bedtime story that tells us we’ve reached the promised land." I explained how victory blindness fed complacency while anti-LGBT forces weren't skipping a beat, figuring out new ways through trial and error to stop us from attaining rights and take away the rights we had gained. It was already happening then, but now, with North Carolina, Mississippi, Houston, Tennessee, a federal bill GOPers are pushing -- the First Amendment Defense Act -- and so much else, the ferocious backlash is in full force. The book looks at the obvious ways the backlash plays out, but also the hidden ways, including in Hollywood and popular culture. But it also offers hope and a plan, on how we win, and again, updated with a new afterword. Check it out on the website. And thanks to everyone who supported the book from day one!

So....more evidence that he's a hypocrite and an opportunist. Somehow, that's not improving my opinion of him.

The double standard can't be more jarring: For days television networks and media outlets have been parroting the FBI in telling us how the San Bernadino shooters were "radicalized" at this or that time, or speculating on their "radicalization" and how it occurred.

Back in March, when Indiana Gov. Mike Pence and the state's Republican-controlled legislature retreated under pressure on a Religious Restoration Freedom Act, many heralded the "moment" as a "turning point" in the battle for full LGBT rights. But last week both North Carolina and Michigan passed discriminatory laws far worse than Indiana's ever was.

There's a full-blown emergency playing out in Texas. It's a gay civil rights emergency, and, if left unchecked, a disaster will occur that could affect the future of gay and transgender people there for some time to come. And yet, there's largely been dead silence from business leaders, public figures, much of the national media and pro-gay politicians.

"With gay leaders kind of clueless about what to do, or still heady after the Supreme Court win, they've not organized the community. Many LGBT Americans aren't even aware of what's playing out. And the national media, too, appears to have blocked it out almost entirely, as these stories play under the radar. It's not surprising then that national politicians aren't talking about these alarming bills."

At a time when Clinton's Democratic rivals are exploiting a dip in her approval numbers, Clinton should be going on the offensive as the candidate fighting for full equality during a civil rights movement of our time. That would not only energize progressives in the party, it would speak to younger voters, including independents.

As long as people like Sens. Ron Johnson and Ted Cruz are working against LGBT equality, none of us should be giving them any cover, let alone raising money for them. We surely don't have the luxury to join them on other issues with which some of us ...
