This week's photo was taken in the stairway of the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust building in London. The building's architect, Sir David Adjaye, was knighted this week. Also, beautiful new designs were revealed yesterday by Gensler Architects for the internal changes to the building that will transform the centre into a co-working hub for up-and-coming architects. Over the next few months I will be documenting the implementation of the new design changes to the Centre and will be sharing them with you here.

Photo of the week: ferry on film. I shot a roll of 35mm black and white film on the ferry from Newhaven to Dieppe and what fun it was. I forgot how interesting it is to have to trust your instincts and not be able to see the shot as soon as you have taken it. The anticipation is worth it and makes for a very different way of photographing.

A recent trip to Northumbria took us to the island of Lindisfarne where the edge of the harbour was lined with large whale-like structures. They were overturned fishing boats that had been cut in half, doors added across the flattened ends and repurposed as sheds. The shape of the boats was accentuated by evenly spaced wooden struts that ran their entire length, making them look even more like beached whales.

The renovation of Southover Grange is complete and awaiting its first wedding. I began documenting the restoration of this Tudor manor in the centre of Lewes as the builders were moving in and returned to the site several times over the following 12 months. This was the registry office for many years (and is now again) so it was a place of weddings and the recording of births and deaths. One of the most significant aspects of this project was how my photographs triggered memories that people felt compelled to share with me. I heard from many residents about their personal connections to the house. I like that a building can hold so many positive associations for a community and that my photographs have the potential to bring them to life.

Photo of the week: Recently I had a very brief visit to New York City. I did not have much time to photograph, but I managed to wander the streets for an hour or so with my camera. I was staying in the Lower East Side, an area filled with former tenement buildings that had originally housed many of New York's immegrant populations. Unbelievably, around 100 years ago this neighbourhood had the highest population density in the world. Now it feels comfortable and friendly and low key. I was intrigued by the ornate building facades, given the humble living quarters they were intended for. As soon as I started looking around, all manner of interesting things appeared, like this young woman peaking out from behind a building.

Recently I have been working with several local schools on their marketing photographs. Recording the enthusiasm and engagement of children makes for a fulfilling day's work and is a nice change from my architectural projects. My aim is to capture the essence of everyday school life, avoiding the usual 'slick' marketing shots. My most recent job was at the small independent Lewes New School, where active participation in learning is a strong component of the curriculum. This pizza-making workshop is one of a variety of Wednesday afternoon activities and is definitely hands-on education.

The re-imagining of the Stephen Lawrence Trust's centre in London has begun and I will be documenting the process along the way, working with Neil Onions, Development Manager of the Building Futures programme and their talented alumni. This striking window designed by the artist Chris Ofili is part of the front of the building before the work begins.

Photo of the week: So often my visits to the Depot Cinema are in brilliant sunshine and this week’s shoot was no exception. The sun was streaming into the building, casting raking shadows across the floor of the new cinema restaurant. What with the blue protective film still on the windows, the large Xs marked in tape, the rectangular blocks of floor covering and the one lone builder, the scene was awash with angular shadows and light.
For almost two years I have been documenting the refurbishment of this old brewery depot in the centre of Lewes as it becomes a new community cinema. My client uses the photos to build on the excitement of the local residents and film buffs.

This is one of a selection of my Southover Grange photographs currently on display at Pelham House. I have been documenting the Tudor manor in the centre of Lewes over the past nine months as it undergoes renovations. The owners, East Sussex County Council, use these photographs to promote their work on the building. For years this was the registry office and the site of many local celebrations. After the current refurbishment it will re-open as a wedding venue once again.

The house was built in the 1570s using stones taken from the ruins of the nearby Lewes Priory, destroyed under Cromwell 35 years earlier (see my blog post here). When I took this photo the plaster had been temporarily stripped away to reveal large pieces of Priory limestone, and even sections of circular columns. A few weeks after this shot was taken, the wall was covered over with plaster and paint, hiding once again the building blocks of the house. This is why I like my job. These glimpses of a building's past are often fleeting. I feel lucky to catch them when I can.

Photo of the week: At the Depot Cinema building site in Lewes, the colour and the repeating lines of the new zinc roof converge with those of the old roofs of the Victorian-era railway station. It is a glimpse of how well the new high-spec modern building will sit within its locality. I have been documenting the refurbishment of this old brewery depot in the centre of Lewes for a year and a half as it becomes a new community cinema. My client uses the photos to build on the excitement of the local residents and film buffs.
