"Celebrating Death" ~I have to admit, sometimes I don't get it, but in New Orleans when someone dies folk often get together in the French Quarter and most surrounding neighborhoods and ...well, party. They say they're celebrating life, sending the deceased to the other side, life-affirming things like that. It's certainly an interesting tradition; I've participated in quite a few myself, having lived here most of the past 40 years.

However, I've been a bit torn lately and here's one reason: This particular video depicts people marching behind a band, celebrating the recently-departed lives of a very talented, popular restaurant worker whose just-as-talented, and beautiful, girlfriend worked at the pub near where this impromptu parade ends. Living nearby I often ate there and got to know her some, but obviously not enough....

The lovely couple died within weeks of each other from heroin overdoses --from murder, in my opinion. Friends tell me they gave police the name of the dealer who was selling the heroin cut with fentanyl; and his reply was: "so?" ©ThomasBalzac|www.vieuxcarretimes.com
