Sugar is NOT your friend.
One in 10 people get a whopping one-quarter or more of their calories from added sugar. Put down that cookie!
Eating too much sugar contributes to numerous health problems, including weight gain, Type 2 diabetes, dental caries, metabolic syndrome and heart disease, and even indirectly to cancer because of certain cancers' relationship to obesity.
Around 1.5 million Americans are diagnosed with diabetes every year, according to the American Diabetes Association. However, the organization also estimates that there are around 7.2 million undiagnosed cases of diabetes, according to a report from 2017.
Be careful with your relationship with sugar.

Many of us are hooked on our phones. The next time you're in a public place, just look around and you're sure to see people looking down at their cell phones. Can you do what this writer did and stop using Google? #doctor #phoneaddiction

We know we've been talking almost exclusively about the height lately, but in all fairness, it's a pretty overwhelming change. If you want to survive the heat, you have to stay on top of all these tips, and practice better self-care than ever before.

For instance, you've always heard exaggerated numbers about exactly how much water you need in a day, but, in the heat this number might actually be accurate. The heat depletes our reserve of nutrients at a much quicker rate than in normal weather to make up for the temperature change, and to fight this, our body needs a consistent flow of hydration.

Make sure you're drinking water BEFORE your body has to ask you for it. Feeling faint or dizzy during the day isn't a good sign, and you shouldn't just accept it as the terms of the weather.

Wearing sunscreen everyday is a good idea.
If you needed another reason for your family to use sunscreen this might be it: Regular sunscreen use in childhood can reduce the risk of melanoma by 40 percent in young adulthood. #sunblock

We've talked a little about the heat wave hitting LA, and as a family medical center, we also wish to inform our patients that children are much more susceptible to heat stroke than adults.

If you have children, remember to have an extra sense for when the heat can be adversely affecting them as well. Read over this list of helpful tips as to how to best provide a defense from the summer heat, and keep your children as safe as possible.

When should you call a pediatrician or family doctor? Read the bottom part of the article and see if your child is experiencing any of these symptoms. If they are, you're clear to check them in with a family medical center for proper care.

A weeklong heat wave is on tap for LA and all over Southern California. Thanks to climate change, summers are longer and hotter. Please take precautions to avoid falling prey to heat-related illness. Remember to apply sunscreen. Keep your pets inside. Drink plenty of water.

What do family physicians love most about their work?

Most commonly, we find the answers focus on the satisfying and personal nature of their work, along with the relationship they get to develop with their patients. Like most forms of work involved with family doctors, family physicians have the opportunity to specialize more heavily on the life and lifestyles of each of their patients.

When you as a patient have the opportunity to pick up a family physician, you should definitely take it if you want the best and most accurately measured results for years to come. One of the most frustrating parts of visiting a major healthcare provider is seeing a new face who you need to fill in on your medical records every time. This can leave a lot of room for error or miscommunication in the long run.

If you want the most beneficial and reliable care from your local doctors, come to West Covina Family Medical Center. Our family physicians are available for flexible hours, on short notice, and with reasonable pricing.

Who Still Smokes in the U.S. – and Why? Some smokers can quit without help, many need counseling and medication, and it can be harder for people in poorer communities to access those aids and other health care services. http://ow.ly/uEsT30ldfth
