Ian turned two years old yesterday. It’s hard to believe in both ways, that it seems so long ago that he was born, and yet it seems like yesterday. It’s so nice to celebrate the completion of our family. His mother, unfortunately, had to work in the…

Today is Nora’s sixth birthday. She claims it’s the best birthday of her entire life. The past few days, she’s been asking if we have all her presents bought. A few of them did get purchased the day before, I will admit. Yesterday, she begged me to at…

On a previous post, I mentioned a list of parenting vocabulary that I had never had the occasion to learn in Spanish until becoming a parent. When my daughter, Nora, was about two, either through some cartoon or a stuffed animal, she and her Spanish…

Yesterday, our family got a little bigger. It has been a dream of my wife’s for many years to own a hamster. I like to watch the look on people’s faces when I tell them that my wife is a veterinarian, watch them say “Awww!”, and then say, “No, a…

For the past three days, my wife has worked super-mega-overtime to the point where she has gone to work before the kids get up and returned home after they are in bed every single day. So it was important that today, we all spend some time together. We’ve…

I first set foot in Spain in January 2001, and visited off and on before becoming a permanent resident in June 2005. [Wow, that’s a decade!] Due to the structure of the human brain, my memories of that time can be easily triggered by smell. Since…

March has seen several major milestones hit by the offspring, pretty much all by Nora, and I’m not even counting her sixth birthday or losing her first tooth, both of which were amazing sources of pride for her. Ian is still plodding along being adorable,…

This morning, from roughly 9am to 11am, Spanish time, there was solar eclipse. Here in northern Spain, it was expected to reach a peak of 80% eclipsage (should be a word). While jadedly pessimistic, I left all my cameras charging the night before, and got…

This past weekend, we spent Saturday afternoon in Santander, specifically on the peninsula that makes up the Parque de la Magdalena, which I consider the item at the very top of the “must see” list for Santander tourism. It was the first sunny day in a…

Last night, as often seems to happen, Ian decided that no, actually, he wasn’t sleepy at bedtime. So I had to bring him downstairs. He managed to veg out with the television for a bit while I finished my workday, and then we played for a bit. At one point…

Thoughts and photos of an American parent living in northern Spain.
Introduction

My name is Erik Rasmussen. This is a little blog that I keep up to lessen the gap between me and my friends and family in the United States. As such, they are my main audience. Other people are welcome to read and comment as well, though.

Originally from North Carolina, I moved to England in December, 2001, and lived and worked there for three and a half years. I moved to northern Spain in June, 2005, and have quickly adjusted to the lifestyle. In March of 2009, my daughter, Nora, was born.
