July has been a pretty full month. The biggest event in the children’s lives was that Nora started her two week summer courses: skating and crafts. Every weekday we go to Nora’s school at 10:15 to begin getting her suited up for skating. She has knee,…

This year, July 4th fell on a Saturday, so it was easy to choose the date for our annual hamburger consumption fest. The regular crowd showed up and we ate hamburgers and a few other appetizers. The kids were away at their Spanish grandparents’ house for…

Plenty of milestones this month. Nora finished her third year of preschool and is now officially a First Grader. It was pretty emotional, since she’s had the same amazing teacher, Viky, for all three years. I’ve been a fan of hers since the beginning. All…

Today I heard one of the best explanations for sports fandom that I’ve ever heard. The team sports as war tribalism metaphor has been obvious to me for a while. What I want to discuss today is not how it feels to be a player, but more about the sports fan…

Last Sunday we were invited out for a paella picnic with @bnanno. She and her husband know many more places around Cantabria to visit, and they took us to a special place just past Cabezón de la Sal, near a town called Ruente. We met up at a place that…

Literally for years my wife has been saying, “Hey, maybe this weekend we can go to Potes!” It’s almost become a running household joke, like an unobtainable holy grail of family activity. Potes is a little mountain village in western Cantabria in the…

Tenerife is the largest island of the seven that form the Canary Islands, and it’s one of the most important tourist destinations in Spain. While I have yet to visit, this Spanish volcanic isle off the western coast of Africa is high on my list of travel…

A podcast I have been enjoying lately, called Note To Self, recently did an episode about a company called Crystal Knows, that performs online searches on people to guess their personality type with the end goal of allowing you, as a marketer, recruiter,…

The following post is an essay written by my high school World History teacher, Kevin McCloy, whom I rank as one of my all time best teachers and one of my better friends. It was originally written in a private response to someone on Facebook, but he…

My eldest child, born in 2009, does not remember a time before she could instantly summon a video call with her grandparents on the other side of the planet. It took science fiction writers no time at all to predict such technology as soon as they saw a…

When people ask me what city they should visit in Spain, the first answer is always the same. Madrid is great and all, and has it’s charm – however, name me another important city on the globe with no bodies of water, not even a river! – Barcelona really…

I was very excited to play in this year’s beach golf tournament last Saturday. It is most likely the only one of its kind in the world, made possible by the unique geography of the beach in Laredo, which has a wide tidal area, where low tide reveals at…

Thoughts and photos of an American parent living in northern Spain.
Introduction

My name is Erik Rasmussen. This is a little blog that I keep up to lessen the gap between me and my friends and family in the United States. As such, they are my main audience. Other people are welcome to read and comment as well, though.

Originally from North Carolina, I moved to England in December, 2001, and lived and worked there for three and a half years. I moved to northern Spain in June, 2005, and have quickly adjusted to the lifestyle. In March of 2009, my daughter, Nora, was born.
