The Department launched MapGive one year ago to link digital diplomacy with collaborative mapping, and to maximize the U.S. Government’s contributions to OpenStreetMap (OSM), a free and editable map of the world.
As a flagship initiative of the Department’s Open Government Plan, MapGive -- managed by the Humanitarian Information Unit (HIU) -- serves as a nexus of expertise in OpenStreetMap for the Department’s domestic bureaus and diplomatic posts, other U.S. Government agencies, and other governments through international fora, such as the Open Government Partnership.

Secretary Kerry pressed Foreign Minister Lavrov to stop Russian and separatist attacks on Ukrainian positions in Debaltseve and other violations of the ceasefire. The Secretary urged #Russia to secure access to Debaltseve for #OSCE monitors who have been blocked from performing their responsibilities according to #Minsk agreements Russia signed in February and last September. They also briefly discussed Libya, Syria, and the Summit on Countering Violent Extremism that we are hosting here in Washington.

U.S. Department of State Spokesperson Jen Psaki comments on Secretary Kerry's conversation with #Russia's Foreign Minister Lavrov during today's Daily Press Briefing.

We would like to invite you to the Open Lecture and Panel Discussion "Cybersecurity: How to respond to growing threats"

Friday, February 27, 2015
6 p.m.
ESMT European School of Management and Technology
Schlossplatz 1, 10178 Berlin

Registration: events@esmt.org

Speaker: Melissa Hathaway, Senior Advisor, Project on Technology, Security, and Conflict in the Cyber Age, Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University

Panelists:

- Sandro Gaycken, Senior Researcher, Cybersecurity and Cyberstrategy, ESMT
- Melissa Hathaway, Senior Advisor, Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, and former Acting Senior Director for Cyberspace at the U.S. National Security Council
- Lars Klingbeil, Member of Parliament, Federal Republic of Germany, and internet policy spokesperson of the SPD parliamentary group

Moderator: Marcel Rosenbach, Der Spiegel

Governments, companies, schools, or critical infrastructures are facing an increasingly challenging cybersecurity environment. Melissa Hathaway, former acting senior director for cyberspace at the National Security Council of the United States, has purported the theory it may not be that we are simply not making enough progress; we may actually be moving backwards. At the ESMT panel discussion “Cybersecurity: How to respond to growing threats”, Melissa Hathaway will outline how technology, practice, policy, and law must be changed and used to assure cybersecurity. Subsequently she will discuss her points of action with Lars Klingbeil and Sandro Gaycken. What minimum standards must be introduced and enforced for devices in a network? Is a solution to be found by focusing on critical services, not critical infrastructures? Which incentives should be introduced to support rapid market adoption of more secure technology? Who should be made accountable?

“Our trade policy aims not only to update the global economic architecture but also to expand it through efforts like the African Growth and Opportunity Act. The cornerstone of U.S. trade policy with sub-Saharan Africa since 2001, this program has supported hundreds of thousands of jobs in the region and created countless market opportunities for American businesses. Updating and renewing this program to reflect changes within Africa and between African countries and their trading partners would send a strong message that America remains deeply committed to this dynamic region and to promoting broad-based development through trade.¨
This century’s defining battle could be won or lost without a shot fired. As President Barack Obama’s National Security Strategy makes clear, the rules-based system…
