"Residents would, no doubt, be happy to go rat-free, but not every Lord Howe islander wants to make the neighborhood safe for gigantic, hard-shell crawling insects. So the Melbourne Museum is mulling over a public relations campaign to make these insects more ... well, adorable, or noble, or whatever it takes."
The insect is so large — as big as a human hand — it's been dubbed a "tree lobster." It was thought to be extinct, but some enterprising entomologists scoured a barren hunk of rock in the middle of the ocean and found surviving Lord Howe Island stick insects.

I've spent nearly 25 years of my life as a journalist, and I don't regret any minute. It annoys me to see surveys like this calling it the "worst job." Journalism, and newspaper reporting, has been good to me.

It's not often my old beat of TV and my journalism in Pittsburgh combine, but it does today: Discovery is planning live coverage of the Google Lunar Xprize mission to the moon, which could end up being Pittsburgh-based Astrobotic Technology, a company I've covered extensively since I've been here in Pittsburgh. Interesting company, interesting technology -- and a real shot at being the first privately funded team to land on the moon.
Pittsburgh's Astrobotic Technology Inc. and Penn State's Lunar Lion team are vying to be the first on the moon. VIDEO

Journalist. Family history buff. Connecticut native.
Introduction
I'm a journalist who has covered two presidential elections, a lot of other recent history, the TV and new media businesses, and the goings-on in small towns like Caribou, Maine, and Weston, Conn. Now I  report, write and web produce for southwestern Pennsylvania's premier source for business news, the Pittsburgh Business Times. I'm a native of Connecticut but happily call Pittsburgh home.
