The real lyricist from the south don't get to see the light of day. People like Jay Electronica really don't have any commercial appeal just like a lot of the lyricist from New York. Only the trash rappers with catchy songs really pop off for the most part. Kendrick Lamar went through the same thing at first.

I'm from Alabama and I must say that the reason you get a lot of trash rap from the south is that in the south you're judged based on how many hits you have. The lyricist from the south like Jay Electronica never get to see the light of because they don't have any commercial appeal. I'm from the south born in 91 and I grew up off of New York hip-hop (Jay-Z, Nas, Wu-Tang, Ja-Rule, DMX, 50 Cent). Remember when Belly came out. Remember the Roc-A Fella/Ruff Ryder days. As a fan of New York hip-hop I must say it's lost it's innovation. I think that's where Jay-Z is winning he can make a fuck with me you know I got it and get the south. Then come back with Picasso Baby or Somewhere in America with a pure New York vibe.
