Internet Directory Scam Targeting London - Warning!

We have been made aware of an Internet Directory Scam targeting businesses. This isn’t a new scam but was recently brought to our attention as it has resurfaced in London, Ontario just this last week. In particular be extremely vigilant of anyone representing themselves as Can Pages Inc. offering a 411 listing.

How it works:
A scammer calls you claiming to be a representative of Can Pages, 411 or Yellow Pages Group. Asking you to renew your contract or tries to sell you new services under the guise of being a well-known online directory. Even if you refuse services via a phone conversation they still send you an invoice. The invoice may reference the person in previous phone conversation as a way to validate the fraud. There have even been cases of scammers splicing parts of a phone conversation together to make it sound like someone within your company authorized the charges. Tell the caller you will call them back and get the company name & contact number. If it is a legitimate company they will have no problem providing this to you. Verify the information they provided is legitimate by searching online to confirm. If the phone number does not match, contact the company via the online number and verify.

What to do once you determine a scam:
DO NOT PAY! Even if they threaten collections (a standard ploy). Inform them no one authorized any charges and you are forwarding all correspondence to your applicable Anti-Fraud agency. In Canada Contact: http://www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca/index.html
U.S. Contact: https://www.anti-fraudhotline.com/

Some of these directory scams can be highly advanced and difficult to detect. Scammers target companies during the busy holiday season so please educate any staff to be vigilant.
