Wow. That is a solid 70 minute set all woven together. That can’t be easy. I had to listen to it three times in a row to make sure I caught all the interconnected threads!

And for the record, I had a cystoscopy and had no idea what it was until I got to the doctor’s office.

The Chieftains, along with Ry Cooder and many Latin artists, released a wonderful album 2010 called "San Patricio". The mix of Latin rhythms with Celtic melodies (thankfully not on the same song) has a certain appeal to me, having grown up with both in my house.

Even more interesting, however is the story behind the album -  the Batallón de San Patricio - "Saint Patrick's Battalion". It was comprised mostly of Irish immigrants, many who deserted from the US Army to fight along side their catholic brethren in the Mexican army. Or perhaps they switched sides because the Mexican army offered more money than the American army. They were known as fierce and fearless soldiers.

When the Americans proved victorious in the war, the members of the San Patricio were singled out by the American army, court-martialed and hung, for in the eyes of the Americans they were traitors. In Mexico they were, and are, regarded as heroes. As with anything, it's all a matter of perspective.

As Paddy Malone says in the liner notes "If the Mexicans were there, there must have been music. I know for myself, if the Irish were there, there would most certainly have been music. And in the music there is always another history, another way of remembering the past, an older remembrance concerned less with battles and imagined borders and more with the ageless themes of love, loss and dreams of what might be. It is a simple, or perhaps after all, a not so simple human commonality."

This is my favorite track from the album, a Celtic march narrated by Liam Neeson.

Was never a fan of Van Halen, but I did enjoy this Spinal Tap-esque recount of the "Women & Children First" album photo shoot!
