One of the best rapid transit plans for Austin I have seen. No tax payer funding, point to point (no transfers). I would expect it to include WiFi as well =)
#austintx Richard Garriott presented at SxSW his plan -- very detailed -- for building a viable mass transit system into Austin using purely private funds. He aims to break ground starting at the U. of Texas before the end of the year. He had one major request: Please, if you think this is a good idea, get your friends to just not say "No." So that's what I'm doing.

Essentially, he's intending to take a working transportation system from the Heathrow Airport in London and expanding it city wide here. It would create a series of raised platforms for running self-guided golf carts. Each one would be capable of carrying four people. You would board at your starting point and it would drive to your destination at full speed (35 mph) the whole way. He's funded several extensive traffic studies to model this and engineering studies to show how to put it through just about every area within 12 miles of downtown and stretching out to the airport and up to Parmer along I-35. The intent is then to keep the network spreading ever wider over time.

The project can be built for less than 1/10th of the cost of the light rail that was proposed on the bond issue a couple years ago. He's got pictures in the presentation of what it would look like in various neighborhoods. It does not create impervious cover. Because various cables can run along the bottom side of the tracks, it can cut down on a lot of sight noise in the city.

Basically, it looked to me like a thoroughly well thought out plan that was entirely doable starting immediately. I encourage you to look through the presentation and visit the website http://usaprt.com

I stuck around for a 45 minute Q&A... if you have any questions, let me know and I'll tell you if I've heard answers. The document is open to comments. The link is public for both this post and the document if you want to share them with more Austinites.

I was just reading an article about household statuses in the US. I got to wondering about this. Can you fill out this poll about your household?

At first glance, I was excited about my children's homework, until I dug deeper.
