Windows 8 was released late last week, and already this week French security firm VUPEN says it has broken Microsoft’s latest and greatest security features. The company claims it has developed a 0-day exploit for Windows 8 and IE10, by chaining multiple undisclosed flaws together.

Domain squatter

A client recently changed their mind about keeping that .com domain after letting it go and asked us to investigate getting it back. Obviously the domain has been picked up by a squatter. After an initial tentative contact we received the following mail (slightly modified to protect the client and personnel):
Hi my name is Josh Skaggs, and I represent the owner of ExpiredDomain.com.  I just wanted to introduce myself to give you a direct contact for questions about pricing and anything else you might need.  The price of this domain is $2,000.00.

Please send me a quick email to let me know if you are still interested in owning this domain and if you have any questions.  I hope to hear from you soon.

After spurting the coffee we had been drinking across keyboard, screen and wall, which is pretty good going if you consider it went through my nose,  we responded with:

Dear Josh,

$2000 is too high. Currently the exchange rate to USD to ZAR (South African Rand) is 1 USD to 8.74 ZAR. So the domain will cost 17480 ZAR, which is the equivalent of a middle class person's monthly salary/ 2050 liters of milk/ 3496 loaves of bread/ 1748 liters of petrol and will cover the rent on my office for 3 months.  As the client is a South African company, it is not THAT important for them to have a .com domain. As domain squatters, I am sure you are not willing to drop the price to something remotely reasonable, so no thanks. The price is too high.

We really hate squatters.
