This year, The Astellas Innovation Debate, organised and funded by Astellas, focuses on one of the greatest challenges of modern times – population ageing.

Human ingenuity has resulted in healthcare developments that have reduced mortality among older people throughout Europe since the 1970s, driving a relentless expansion of the older demographic. By 2060, for every pensioner aged 65 years or older there will be only two people aged 15-65 to contribute to society as workers, and the proportion of very elderly people aged 80+ is set to triple.

With some experts predicting spiralling health and welfare costs as old-age diseases like cancer and dementia tighten their grip, while others champion the substantial contribution that older people can make as workers, volunteers and consumers, what are the true challenges presented by an ageing population? And can the ingenuity that led to an ageing society provide novel solutions, turning old age into a new age?

In a debate spanning medicine, technology, employment, welfare and ethics, hear leading experts discuss the issues and propose their solutions – ways for society to make it through The Age Crunch.
