For a high school curriculum, dividing up subjects into separate specialized classes is pure pragmatism. For understanding real life, it's a little disjointed. "There is an artificiality to a disciplinary approach to the world," says Andy Meyers, a history teacher at the Ethical Culture Fieldston School, a private school in the Bronx. "We don’t walk through the world and look at a building or look at a park and say, OK, so the next 45 minutes I'm...

America's metro areas generate 80 percent of the country's GDP. But so far, that economic reality has not generated a proportional amount of political clout.

In his State of the Union address, President Obama spoke directly to the need to create more high-wage jobs. “I want to speak about how we move forward, and lay out a blueprint for an economy that’s built to last," he declared. "This blueprint begins with American manufacturing." But if Obama’s blueprint for prosperity begins with manufacturing, it can hardly end with it. The only real solution lies in turning the massive number of low-wage, lo...

In California Governor Jerry Brown's “state of the state” address today, he devoted a significant chunk of his talk to the state’s embattled high speed rail project. He says the project will move forward, despite a recent blow from an independent review group that advised legislators against funding the project. Brown says a new business plan is in the works that will better make the case for the project, which he argues is crucial for the growi...

I learned that in sustainability class from Peter S (I also question its validity). I think the packaging and gas is usually much more. Although this may only apply to produce and it also depends on where the city and suburb is. For instance Madison will likely be more sustainable than L.A. because of the proximity to so many farms per capita.

I agree with your conclusions, especially that it's variable on the food item. I also think its variable on the city/suburb/etc. and its hard to draw any conclusion.
