I'm not a politician, not even a student of politics; in fact, I'm not a student of much of anything. I'm not a Democrat. I'm not a Republican, and I don't even consider myself an American. If you and I were Americans, there'd be no problem. Those Honkies that just got off the boat, ...

MLA Talk 2015: "My Life, Not in 'Middlemarch': Anti-Academic Literary Critical Memoirs"
I presented a somewhat shorter version of the following talk on a panel that I also organized, called "Academic Prose and Its Discontents" at the 2015 MLA convention. The idea here -- apropos of this particular panel -- was to experiment with a somewhat loo...

In Defense of Stephen Salaita
My initial reaction upon hearing about Stephen Salaita’s “unhiring” at the University of Illinois this week was shock.  One reason for that is that I can certainly see myself in his shoes. I have been involved in sometimes vehement arguments online for more...
One reason for that is that I can certainly see myself in his shoes. I have been involved in sometimes vehement arguments online for more than a decade. In some rare instances (mostly in the first months I was online), I let my emotions get the better of me. Mostly while arguing with supporters ...

The Telegenic Dead: a Poem
I am going to be working on an experimental poem for the next few days. The method of the poem is simple: I'll look at pictures coming out of the current conflict and write about what I see.  The title of the project is inspired by the following quote from ...

Don't Run (a poem)
Don’t run When you run, they think you’re running for a reason. You might not have a reason to run other than fear of authority, but don’t run.  At the end of the month, when the cops are filling out arrest quotas, you look like a jackpot. Like a promotion....
At the end of the month, when the cops are filling out arrest quotas, you look like a jackpot. Like a promotion. Don't move when they pull out their guns. Don't run. Don't think of family, don't think of a future, don't think: what are they taking me for? Don't talk back. Don't question the gun.

Bodies on the Pavement: A Reflection on Malcolm X, Police Violence, and Changing One's Mind

[The above image is from Ferguson, Missouri. The name of the young man on the ground is Michael Brown. There are much more shocking images of his body on that street that many of us have seen. I chose this one because it at least affords him the dignity of being covered.] ...

"Serial" as an Asian American Story
I was hearing a lot about Serial this fall, though I didn't actually start listening to the podcasts until after hearing a lot of discussion of the podcast at Thanksgiving. And then I pretty much devoured it, listening to episodes 1-10 in the course of a si...

thanks for the post. i hadn't seen the desai essay before, but i agree with your assessment. i suppose it's the natural south asian yang to kang's korean yin (which i criticized in the past despite liking his work in grantland.)

it's not an excuse to be ignorant about race, but i think a lot of the critical asians misunderstand the target audience and production of TAL (and NPR in general) that influences serial.
