Acceptable to be unacceptable?
As a Packers fan I just don't know what to say.  First, it is acceptable to lose in the NFC Championship game . However, the way in which the Packers just lost the NFC Championship game is unacceptable.  It is unacceptable to lose when you have a 12 point l...

GPU upgrade time: XFX Double Dissipation R9-290X-EDFD Radeon R9 290X

Hello. I just recently found your blog and I have to say they are AMAZING! I think a new hobby of mine is now reading your blogs. Thank you for the blogs!
I am a 14 year old buy btw. Do you know the game Dragon Bane Elite? Just curious, because I play it and I saw a user named Heartlessgamer on server 5 in the arena. I was wondering whether you can please help me. My school assigns us to survey people and ask them 3 questions, none of which are personal. Can you please help? I would appreciate it and I already recommended your blogs.
The three questions are:
1) What was your favorite subject in school?
2) Give 10 tips on how to get good grades in school?
3) How many hours did you spend studying everyday?

Thanks.

Whats your PC build?  I am upgrading some components in my PC (specifcially the GPU to start) and was looking to see if there were similiar builds out there that I could reference to videos of WvW group fights performance.  Right now a fight like this would be a slide show on my PC and completely unplayable.  My GPU was last updated to a GTX 260 in 2009.  I am moving to an R9 290X this coming week.

While I think your point is consistent and an accurate reflection of the AAA MMO space I think you completely overlook the market in its totality.  There is a choice for every play style out there now.  The very game with the experience you dictate is out there somewhere.  Your argument is more lamentation for the games you played that changed to meet the majority, not the minority, of their player base.

I've had many discussions about this and the raw data of early WoW raiding backs this up: there was an overwhelming (90%) of the game that could not access the content.  And that was actually fine.  What was not fine was that there was no bridge to get people to that content so it was the literal hardcore minority receiving the majority of the development attention of WoW.  That was not a sustainable model.  WoW changed to a model of bridged content and what you saw was part easier content but more so connected content that had an on ramp accessible to all players.  This lead to a much higher majority of players accessing the content because there was a path for gearing up consistently.  Had this ramp up existed in early WoW, UBRS and other "hard" dungeons would not have been hard.  The challenge of UBRS/etc was simply in the lack of sufficient gear distribution.  Once gear was there most groups had them on /farm mode.

Your gun analogy is a good item to review.  Did you use power tools?  If so, there is a subset of hardcore restorers out there that will look down on your as cheapened by the use of power tools.  This is exactly where you exist in the stance of "the grind".  You are the gunsmith who has worked with hand tools your entire life looking down on the guy on Youtube who whipped out an electric grinder (pun intended) to file off that rough edge.

I'd also argue your last question defeats your whole point.  Do you think that the 90% of players who were locked out of WoW's end game in early raiding felt exceptional?  Or do you think now that 90% of the player base can access and complete the majority of content make them feel exceptional?  I think you will find in an honest answer of those questions why WoW changed to what it has and why so many MMOs have followed suit.  Blizzard did exactly what you argue for: they made players feel exceptional.

MMOs are successful due to the majority not the minority.  The market is no longer a 3 game show and you cannot expect the major AAA titles to cater to minority mindsets.
