WMU is part of the EU research project PROMERC (Protection Measures for Merchant Ships) that aims to reduce the vulnerability of EU merchant fleets and maritime supply lines to criminal abduction and extortion and thereby reduce risk to mariners, shipping and the environment while also reducing costs and remaining cognisant of legal and social constraints. The second newsletter for the project is now available.

As the International Maritime Organization’s apex institution for high-level maritime education and research, our mission is to serve the global maritime community in furtherance of IMO’s aims and objectives

WMU is truly an organization by and for the international maritime community. Established by an IMO Assembly Resolution in July 1983, its basic aim is to further enhance the objectives and goals of IMO and IMO member states around the world.

The University operates on the basis of a Charter adopted by the IMO Assembly, and is accountable to the IMO Secretary-General, Council and Assembly, and to an international Board of Governors composed of representatives of some 50 different governmental, industry, labour and educational bodies. The University presents its annual report and budget to the IMO Council and also reports to the biennial session of the IMO Assembly.

Since its foundation in 1983, WMU has established an excellent reputation as a global centre for advanced education and research in the maritime field.  We offer high-quality professional education that provides students with a unique insight into the maritime sector.
WMU offers only postgraduate degrees: Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Master of Science (MSc), and Postgraduate Diploma (PGD).
In Malmö, Sweden, we offer a program leading to a Master of Science in Maritime Affairs.  Students can specialise in one of six areas: Maritime Safety & Environmental Administration, Maritime Law & Policy, Marine Environmental & Ocean Management, Port Management, Shipping Management and Maritime Education & Training.
In Shanghai, China, we offer a Master of Science in International Transport & Logistics, and in Dalian, China, we offer a Master of Science in Maritime Safety & Environmental Management.  The China-based programs are designed and taught by WMU professors.
WMU offers two PhD programs: one in Maritime Administration, taught in Malmö; the other in Maritime Law or International Commercial Law, taught jointly with the Swansea University in Britain.
The University also offers a Postgraduate Diploma in Marine Insurance by distance learning, in association with Lloyd’s Maritime Academy.
WMU provides an extensive program of short-term Professional Development Courses, joined by about 700 students each year, which are closely linked to specific units of the MSc programme which have been selected to offer high-quality professional updating.
In addition, we arrange tailor-made Executive Development Programs for individual clients, which harness the University’s expertise to meet the client’s training needs in a specific topic.
