Punishment for Zina:

In this world:
Noor on face is removed.
Life is shortened.

In the Hereafter:
Allaah will be angry with him.
Allaah will account him severely (i.e. will judge him harshly).
He will be punished with the Fire.

“Your soul is just like your enemy, once it finds you serious, it obeys you. If it finds weakness from you, it will take you as a prisoner”

Declare (O Muhammad salAllaahu `alayhi was-salaam) unto My slaves, that truly, I am the Oft-Forgiving, the Most-Merciful. And that My Torment is indeed the most painful torment.

[Surah Al-Ĥijr :49-50]

The greatest of calamities is a hardened heart
— Hudhayfah bin Qataadah , [Siyar A`laam an-Nubalaa` 9/284]

Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali mentions the importance of the acceptance of deeds by writing:

“It is narrated from ‘Ali (raadiAllaahu ‘anhu) that he said, ‘Be more concerned about the acceptance of deeds than about the deeds themselves. Haven’t you heard Allah say: Indeed, Allah only accepts from the muttaqoon [Surah Al-Mā'idah :27]?’”

The best of prayers for forgiveness

It was narrated from Shaddaad ibn Aws (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa sallam):

“The best of prayers for forgiveness is:

Allaahumma anta rabbiy laa ilaaha illa anta, khalaqtani wa ana ‘abduka wa ana ‘ala ‘ahdika wa wa’dika ma astata’tu. A’oodhu bika min sharri ma sana’tu, aboo’u laka bi ni’matika ‘alayya wa aboo’u laka bi dhanbi, faghfir li fa innahu laa yaghfir al-dhunooba illa anta

(O Allaah, You are my Lord, there is no god but You.
You have created me and I am Your slave and I am keeping my promise and covenant to You as much as I can. I seek refuge with You from the evil of what I do.
I acknowledge Your blessing and I acknowledge my sin, so forgive me, for there is none who can forgive sin except You).”
He said:

“Whoever says this during the day, believing in it firmly, and dies on that day before evening comes, he will be one of the people of Paradise, and whoever says it at night, believing firmly in it, and dies before morning comes, he will be one of the people of Paradise.”

Imam Ibn al-Qayyim rahimahullah said:

By Allah! The enemy did not wrong you except after the Lord abandoned you, so do not think that Shaitan overpowers you, it is just that the Protector (Allah ta'ala) Who has forsaken you. Beware of your soul, for no misfortune befalls you except because of it, so do not ever be reconciled with it. By Allah! Its honour is derived from its submission (to Allah), its dignity is derived from its subservience, its reform is derived from its breakdown, its comfort is derived from its hardship, its security is derived from its fear (of Allah), and its pleasure is derived from its sorrow.

[al-Fawaaid (1/68)]

A heart will not be saleem (pure), if it is spiteful, jealous, amazed with itself, and arrogant.
