A great explanation about how China could potentially effect all of us and some sound advice / observations from Robert Peston BBC Economics editor: "it encourages us to live beyond our means". We've been here before and no doubt will return, but sound direction is required to steer our economy through stormy waters, so of which is out of our control and I would question if we have someone strong enough to stand at the helm.

With yesterday's monetary easing by the People's Bank of China failing to calm markets, is India's central bank governor right that governments expect too much of central banks?

Love a bit of William Blake: No bird soars too high if he soars with his own wings.

“If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is, Infinite. For man has closed himself up, till he sees all things thro' narrow chinks of his cavern.”

Following on from the Leading Women workshop, here are the details from my slides. Intro Quite often, people‘s gut reaction to twitter is, “no one needs to know what I‘m doing,” or “I don‘t care what other people are doing,”..

We ran a rather unsuccessfully competition a few years ago - 10KB Challenge - in which we asked designers to create a website under 10kb (here's a couple that we did).

What is really interesting is if you run these through Google's page insights tools (given that these were designed around 4 years ago!

I was asked a couple of questions by a concerned parent and decided the best way to answer was via a blog, so that other parent could refer to it. The questions where:

(1) Does computing stunt a child’s creativity
(2) Do children become addicted to computers

We've tried to provide a rational response to the questions and I have asked the entire team for their thoughts.

See what we said: http://bit.ly/1NWePuX
I was recently asked a couple of questions, by a concerned parent and thought it was worth spending some time and answering the question in a rational and constructive manner. The first question was “does computing stunt a child's creativity”; the second was “do children become addicted to ...

I saw an article this morning on the BBC - How to turn your child into a video games designer http://bbc.in/1JzBKMY - and thought it could do with some perspective.

(1) Salaries for the majority aren't the six figure salaries the few receive; the number of successful gaming developers represents a very small proportion of the entire sector.
(2) The reality is that gaming programmers are some of the best developers out there, as they have to master Software Development Kits (SDK) for complex hardware like DirectX, etc and numerous Application Programming Interfaces (API) as well as master languages like Java, C and C++.
(3) This is a high stress sector with deadlines that can't be missed as marketing etc sets a date for launch and builds up expectations prior to the launch; failure isn't an option.

So, whilst gaming might appear attractive for youngsters, they need to take a long hard look at themselves and ask if they can cut it in what must be one of the most competitive, aggressive development environments!
Advice from the professionals about what to do if your offspring says they want to become a games designer

It's a worrying trend to hear about design studios charging huge amounts of money to update older websites to ensure they pass Googles mobile friendly test http://bit.ly/1LAgyIU when in reality, it should take more than two or three hours (depending on the original design).

Whilst many businesses should serious consider revamping their websites, this is typical of the website design industry and we've seen it so many times before (DDA compliance, cookies, etc).

We repeatedly see design studios pitching at businesses using scare tactics to try and sell their services based on fear!

Not all website designers take this approach, so please don't take my comments as a global criticism, there are some great designers out there doing a fabulous job, but there are some that will use under hand tactics to sell their services!

Just updated http://bit.ly/1hen9eC so that it passes Google's mobile friendly test and is now fully #responsive #rwd

The Dumb Post has recently been taken over by Steve and Caroline, who have given the pub some much needed TLC that is starting to pay dividends. The food and beer is excellent and somehow they seem to have found the balance between pub and gasto pub. I would suggest Wes Martin revisits the pub as I am sure Steve would be delighted to have live music there.
